I wouldn't be so quick to celebrate. Bush nominated a white for this pick, which means it is a virtual certainty that a non-white will be picked to replace Rhenquist. So say hello to Chief Justice Alberto Gonzalez.
Sorry, doesn't compute. It means the next pick is a woman, and the STEVENS pick will be Garza. It's a three-fer, and you Bush bashers need to apologize, big time.
Yes, and it was certain Bush would nominate a woman, a minority or Gonzales.
You have no credibility, nor do any that raised these unfounded accusations. The President just shot down his critics, he is due an apology.
Who cares if they're white? As long as they're conservative, I couldn't give a damn what their race or sex is.
And neither should you.
Thank you for the doom and gloom prediction (extreme sarcasm)
Wrong - a Chief Justice can be elevated from among the Associate Justices on the current court and the new nominee could simply be one of 8 "Associate Justices" - not saying that will necessarily happen, just that it could.
Say hello to Chief Justice Scalia or Chief Justice Thomas!!! :^) (maybe, I sure don't claim to know)
That is hardly a given.
It would please me if Bush ditches identity picks.
I would try to just be happy with this...he did not pick Gonzales whom we do know a bit about and neither Clement who don't know much about.
Roberts has a proven good record..almost as solid as Luttig or Brown.....
Let's bitch when and if W does pick a moderate
Roberts is a buddy of Hugh Hewitt's, he is estatic with the pick. For the most part I trust Hugh's judgement.
As said previously "GAME ON"
...uh...Bush could "promote from within"....
JRBrown, JRBrown, JRBrown. Just keep saying it over and over again. A woman and a minority. Double whammy. Take that libs!
The type of poster who, on Christmas morning, starts crying because Christmas is now a whole year away.
That's the weakest prediction ever, seriously.
Perhaps this is to give Janice Rogers Brown some bench time before a prmotion. A black woman conservative Chief Justice nominee? Sweet.
I remember you! You were that snotty kid with the permanent pout sitting in a pile of birthday candy telling everyone that it was just going to give you a tummy ache!
Now wait...could also be Garza, or Estrada.
When Chief Justice Rehnquist retires, the president will have the option of appointing someone directly to the Chief Justice's position or of appointing another associate justice and moving one of the current justices to the CJ spot. I won't be at all surprised if the president nominates Alberto Gonzales to the next Rehnquist vacancy but promotes Justice Thomas to the Chief Justice's position. That move would require two confirmations instead of one, but it could be a good move all around.
Bill
I think we're looking now at the next Chief Justice...John G. Roberts.
