Preserving modesty in the pool (Muslim women in Seattle)
Seattle Times ^ | July 19, 2005 | Lornet Turnbull

Posted on 07/19/2005 1:03:41 PM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.

Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.

The women and children — all Muslims — have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.

Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.

But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...

Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

Right. Does this policy mean the girl lifeguards can pick up some overtime but the boy lifeguards can't?
That would be discrimination.

Making them pay the rental fee for the pool like everyone else is bending over and kissing their butts?

You wrote: "This is not nice. We are allowing them to dictate to us and forcing us to adapt to their 'religious' rules"

There is no hint of "dictation" or "force." You have a group that pays money to rent a pool. They are women who like an unusual degree of privacy. Not only are they not forcing themselves on anybody, they are consciously keeping out of everybody else's face.

Maybe if you took a few deep breaths?

Because if white Christians wanted the same privileges they would be called racist pigs.

They are forcing the male lifeguards to cloak out while the females get to make money.

"allowing women of faith to swim alone"

That's what bathtubs are for.

Although the slimes currently "allow" members of other religious groups to swim with them, I predict that soon they will demand it be closed to non mu-slimes.

FYI:

I am an Orthodox Jew and I can confirm that the Orthodox practice is similar: men and women (as well as boys and girls over a certain age) never swim together and women will never be seen by men in anything like swim clothes or workout type clothes. There is no equivalent of the Burka. Orthodox women may dress very fashionably, wear makeup and do not have to cover their faces in any way.

The key point here is modesty: if we are revealing in our dress, we get certain ideas about the skin we can see.

"Making them pay the rental fee for the pool like everyone else is bending over and kissing their butts?"

Sending home male lifeguards. How many times has our society gone bonkers over gender bias. And they send home male lifeguards? This isn't sexism? This is in keeping with our culture?

It's time to put an end to this charade of calling islam a religion.

Agreed! It sure ain't religion: a cazy murder cult would be more accurate!

Do they have to check in the body bombs and the automatic rifles. Or are they allowed pool side?

Does swimming once a month replace bathing.

"Exactly, if you can not abide by US law, don't swim. The pool certainly can not blatantly violate US law with some of its employees.

Thee's some kind of Federal U.S. Swimming Code that says that groups can't rent a pool? Nonsense. And if there were, wouldn't principled conservatives oppose such a stupid, intrusive law?

BTW, and it shouldn't even have to be said, but if the Baptists want to rent the place for baptisms, and the Boy Scouts wnat to rent it for swim classes or whatever, why the heck not?

Isn't this kind of a liberty issue?
