It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.
Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.
The women and children all Muslims have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.
Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.
But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...
Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

Thank you God that I was not born a muslim!!!
The article states public pools are modifying their hours, excluding others, telling male employees to go home, to allow a certain segment of society a privilege others do not have.
As I said, private, fine, but public pools, hell no.
If that's what they want, build a pool at the islamic centers and swim in burkas for all i care.
And if they wish to swim with clothes on, don't exclude others from a taxpayer run property for that privilege.
Or a bomb
Muslim women have been programmed to do their job: function as terrorist incubators.
There. Fixed it.
Bingo! We have a winner!
"Just so long as we never ask Muslims to conform to the American way of life. Just so long as we bend over backwards not to offend them. Just so long as we kiss their butts because we are so happy to have them in our country. I know I feel safer with Muslims in America."
You said what I was thinking, better than I thought it! :)
Explain to me why you want to "fight them and win."
Also explain to me why this argument wouldn't apply to swim-caps, swim-trunks, in fact any clothing at all.
Family story: my own granddmother is reputed to have begged off swimming, once, because she needed to repair the knees on her swim outfit. (Victorian--- and that's no secret!) :oD
So they employ male and female lifeguards but kick out the male employees to accomadate the Muslims. This only makes the public pool party to the suppression of Muslim women by their jerk zip-wad men. Make them follow the pool rules and wear appropriate swimsuits.
Or....they could put their own swimming pools in their Islamic Centers that are so well financed with oil profits.
What is the differnece between a group of muslim women renting the pool for their private use and me and my buddies renting it to have a cannonball contest?
ROFL!!!!
I'm certain you wouldn't mind a return of prayer to public schools, though.
Sick people.
Why not just step into a drawstring garbage bag and tie it tight?
There is something seriously wrong when you 'hide' yourself from the world you live in and fear it.
OKAY....question....how many of YOU would really go swimming in a PUBLIC POOL in Seattle anyway?
More proof that Islam is a cult religion for brainwashed...
No. Modifying for muslim demands would require that the pool gives the pool time to the muslims free of charge to accomidate their religious requirements. They are not doing that. The muslim women and children are having to do what any other group would have to do to have private use of the pool for a period of time.
All it says in the koran is that women's breasts should be veiled, nothing about the face and head being covered.
Mecca must've been a fun place before old Mo'.
The burka was probably a preislamic mode of dress suitable for a hot sunny dry climate - preserves the skin from excessive dehydration and exposure.
There is a movement with the Chrisitan community for women who take the biblical exhortation to cover their head literally and at all times. I found a website through them that sells modesty bathing costumes to them (or anyone that would want one I suppose). One of the suits was from a victorian pattern. Some are more like a wetsuit that ends just above the knee. I have seen Mennonite women standing in the surf just up to their ankles, because they can't wear a bathing suit.
There is something to be said for segegration in some things, where women can just be themselves, like Curves not allowing men into their excercise rooms. I like that. (Don't have to worry about sucking in my tummy when the guys aren't around :P).
If women of any religion are allowed in while these ladies have the pool, it doesn't bother me.
