Preserving modesty in the pool (Muslim women in Seattle)
Seattle Times ^ | July 19, 2005 | Lornet Turnbull

Posted on 07/19/2005 1:03:41 PM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.

Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.

The women and children — all Muslims — have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.

Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.

But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...

Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

Assimilation is much nicer.

Talk about dizzy contradictions by Mrs. Don-o. Guess it's too difficult keeping up with your dizzy "implied" spin cycles.

Is "tracts of land" the phrase you're looking for?

"Why mask the windows if they were going to wear burkas?"

Your "common sense" spin does not trump the plain statement in the article that some women continue to wear flowing garments. Your inference is clearly wrong and the result of your Western sensibility.

Your lack an understanding of the level of the extremism of some Muslims on this issue. I hoped my post on letting school children die in a fire would enlighten you, but I see you still can not grasp how insane this can be.

Many are so extreme and their body shame so profound that they would never reveal their body in public, even a sexually seggregated public.

That's 'ok' I'm sure you don't understand Jihadists either.

I am curious why the people on this thread trying to accomodate Muslims aren't more concerned about the fact that the London Bombing mastermind might have been involved in setting up a terror cell in Seattle. Are you sure accomodation is the right approach.

"The best way to get results is to show them that it's possible to be treated like a human being. This is one way to do it.'

What a load of liberal hooey.

So our lack of treating them like a "human being" causes their terror? Funny because they appear to like to bomb all the places that treat them best -- US, Spain, London. They never had it so good in their homelands.

The places that adhere to mistreating them via torture, brutality, lack of fredom, lack of self-governance are their ideals.

Get a grip!

I don't get it.
Mean?
I thought the phrasing of the sentence was interesting too.
"Islam" doesn't seem to want to "let" women do much of anything without male supervision.
Is it mean to notice that? Sorry!

I would question why I- living in a free country- can not go outdoors! Why people who are supposed to 'love' me will brutalize me if I do what the rest of humanity does? There are PLENTY of questions these women could ask.
Allowing them places to practice repression insures that questions like - 'why do I have to cover myself like a desert bedouin in modern America? Why is associating like other citizens dangerous to my LIFE? Why can't we change?" will never be answered. They won't even have to be asked.
I'd question all of that- but then I haven't been brainwashed by a death-cult.

...there are those who would consider such concessions to be a coddling of Islam, and you must therefore be a terrorist sympathizer.... (Do you ever wonder about folks who make such leaps?)

IMO, these sort of leaps have become more common in threads here over the last few months (since the Schindler-Schiavo debate). Having wondered about it has led me to two conclusions:

  1. Emotion clouds reason, and those that persistently demonstrate these leaps are probably ruled by emotion (if not something more pathological).

  2. There are enough FReepers that use/tolerate the tactic, that their number just seems to be increasing.

I continue to hope that reasoned confrontation will begin to turn the corner on the trend. No sweat though - debate is debate. It's just more enjoyable when it's intelligent.

She's the type we should be force feeding into these nutcases.

I guarantee she is the type that would get right into the face of any Imam, Mullah, etc. and chew them up. By the time she would be done with them, they'd be begging for a trip to Club Gitmo. I'm not sure though what would drive them crazy more. A Muslim woman who loves the United States, hates radicals, and will express her own opinions right to their faces, or one who does mind showing off her, ummm, feminine assets.

Funny, she loves the United States as much as anyone who is a natural born citizen and far more than people like Moveon.org, ANSWER, etc. and yet some people think because a person is from the Middle East and/or is a Muslim means they should be either put into camps or killed. Sadly people like her, who would be willing to take a stand against the radicals, are seriously lacking.

You can't tell that by your style of posting. You sound more like Mohammed Atta's father (see recent thread on same....) than a person who lives in a free country.

Ah :-D
Ignore entire post and all points and INSULT!
Sure sign that your comfort level has been exceeded! I'm honored!
Try it your way, hon. Just put some serious understanding and love and welcome on EVERY Muslim you meet.
The next Mohammed Atta will thank you for your assistance.

I'll go on assuming people who call themselves Muslims believe in what their Koran says and treat them accordingly.
I won't have to wonder if I saw the next homicide bomber and gave him a perky-'Have a Good Day!'

Middle Eastern polygamy and oppression of women clouds sanity, and those that persistently demonstrate and appease such actions are ruled by deviant mysogyny with heaps of pathology. Read the current People magazine article about todays young males in the polygamy communities in Utah and Arizona and how they are competing and fighting with the older males over the young girls. Finally they're fighting the elders in that sick sect where young girls are offered up to the old men which border and at times is child pedophilia.

"Sadly people like her, who would be willing to take a stand against the radicals, are seriously lacking."

Sadly too many alleged muslims like her are not taking a stand against the radicals in the mid east or located in other countries. THAT IS WHY OUR MILITARY HAD TO GO OVER THERE and rid the mid east of sickos like Saddam and Sons who BTW were allowed to gas, torture and rape their own citizens while the rest of the citizens shook in fear. Sadly too often it takes outside forces to "free" people too willing to sit back and do nothing verbally or physically as had to be done during WWII, ridding the world of sicko Hitler and Mussolini.

I suggest you don't diss a friend of mine without actually knowing the person or their family. Like President Bush, I take it personally when someone slams a good friend. That said, I guess you wouldn't approve of her younger brother serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.
