It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.
Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.
The women and children all Muslims have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.
Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.
But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...
Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

If it involves Islam it does.
What do you think would happen to those Muslim women if they DARED swim where, and as, they liked in disobedience to their abusive husbands and religion?
Those are not progressive, modernized Muslim families. They obey Sharia- and Sharia has very PAINFUL punishment for women who disobey. Those women are prisoners- how can we be talking about how to make it easier and nicer for them to be oppressed?
That pool wasn't rented to modest women of another 'faith'. That rent paid for a place where SHARIA LAW ruled in the US.
First they rent- then they demand!
One of the things that we have discovered in Europe, is that islamic "modesty" involving the hijab, directly exposes the native female population to harrasment and rape.
When the fundamentalist notions of modesty takes root, it does not only affect the people who wear the hijab. Slowly, people who are not wearing the headgear turns into prey.
The way to fight them and win on this is via public health argument...that if someone is clothed you cannot see whether they have open sores or other such condition that might threaten their fellow bathers, and therefore it is unsafe to allow them in a public pool.
"Other Saudis would try to get near our encampments to gawk at our ladies in their bathing suits."
Proof, it doesn't matter how many layers of fabric they hide under, they're forked tongued hypocrites!
I totally agree. Probably the worst an Orthodox woman would face is social pressure and disapproval.
Nachon.
So you think that, for the price of rental, there can be places IN THIS COUNTRY where Sharia Law rules?
Talk about 30 pieces of silver!
Did they have fresh litter in the wife box?
"One of the things that we have discovered in Europe, is that islamic "modesty" involving the hijab, directly exposes the native female population to harrasment and rape. "
I would say it's because muslim men are barbaric animals. Self control is not one of their strengths, hence islam - submission.
islam is a much bigger problem than most here in America understand, or will admit.
No it's not. It is the end of assimilation pressure in the USA. Our assimilation pressure is what has allowed us, in the past, the successfully assimilate successive waves of immigrants. Now that we have stopped assimilating new arrivals in favor of accomodation, balkanization will occur and it will cause great harm to our nation.
As long as it's not government doing it, why not?
Thank you! A bunch of Orthodox Jewish ladies being mad at one is no little thing- but it's not death for dishonoring the family.
I do.
" If renting space to an abusive 'religion' that helps enforce their brutal rules for their women isn't participating in that religion I don't know what is."
I agree. The thing PC Americans can not wrap their teeny tiny minds around is that every muslim thought, every muslim action IS based on their religion. No ifs, ands or buts. I as a Christian do not make every decision during every waking moment based on my religion. Huge difference.
The food I eat is not based on my religion. The clothes I wear is not based on my religion. My home furnishings are not based on my religion so on and so forth.
"I do."
I disagree, but wouldn't stop you from remaining segregated, as long as you don't force me to do the same.
muslims are different. It's a political agenda being pushed by a religion.
let the record reflect that I retired my bikinis three pregnancies ago !
I'm something between an atheist and an agnostic.
And I approve of much more segregation of the sexes than we currently have.
Much more.
That is the truth. Some here try to separate Islam from the daily life of a Muslim and it can't be done. Some- even in our government- are just too uncomfortable with accepting that idea. To approve what a Muslim does IS to approve Islam.
They now know that $$$ buys a place where Sharia Law can be enforced.
Jesus help us!
" islam is a much bigger problem than most here in America understand, or will admit."
That's because too many Americans have allowed themselves to be lulled into apathy with entertainment. Stimulate the minds of the masses with idle brain filler while the enemy slips in the back door.
Clearly you disagree, but I believe there is a double standard. Why do they want to have a private swim time? It's not simply to avoid crowds...it's to maintain a level of modesty that they see as dictated by their religion. They are having a private swim time to observe their religious tenants...the same as the Christians, although I think the Christians would be willing to do it at public time but wanted the private time to avoid causing issues with anyone who didn't want to observe the religious practice. Again, I don't have a problem with them renting the pool, but the separation of church and state thing is so poorly interpreted that we might as well burn the rest of the constitution as well thanks to the flaky judges we've had and their rulings. But my point is, they are both observing behavior directly related to their religious tenants.
