It's so easy to put a gallon or two of water, a blanket, some non-spoilable food, a first-aid kit (just the simplest of items will help) and a change of clothes in the trunk. Broadcast aims to reassert al-Qaeda role

The broadcast by Ayman al-Zawahiri is the latest in a series of recent messages by leaders of al-Qaeda that analysts believe
might be part of a campaign to reassert authority over the holy war with the west.
Since April 2004, there have been at least nine tapes from the two al-Qaeda leaders, all of which have drawn close scrutiny
from security agencies and terrorism analysts because Osama bin Laden has said repeatedly his public statements were
important sources for those wishing to understand the network's ideology and political goals.
A report sent to the US government in June by the influential Congressional Research Service, the non-partisan analysis
agency, found that despite the al-Qaeda leaders' limited ability to provide command and control to operatives, as they
become increasingly isolated by US and Pakistani forces near the Afghan border, Mr bin Laden and his top lieutenants have
stepped up their efforts to put their message across.
Given the increased public profile of foreign fighters in Iraq, and the corresponding rise of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the
Jordanian militant believed to be leading the Iraqi insurgency, the CRS report said there is mounting belief that Mr bin Laden
and his aides are trying to use the public pronouncements to return themselves to the centre of the jihadist campaign, or holy
war.
The report states: "The ideological content and highly political tone of the recent statements have led some terrorism analysts
to speculate that the messages may signal a renewed attempt by bin Laden and his associates to create a lasting leadership
role for themselves and the al-Qaeda organisation as the vanguard of an emerging, loosely-organised internationalist
movement.
"Others have argued that the presently limited operational capabilities of al-Qaeda's central leaders have inspired them to
revive ideological outreach efforts."
As part of that effort, the tapes have increasingly used Iraq as a touchstone for the jihadi cause. Many are addressed directly
to western audiences in what appears to be an effort to discourage domestic support for European and American foreign
policies.
Mr al-Zawahiri used that tactic again yesterday, blaming the London attacks on the policies of Tony Blair, prime minister. Mr
bin Laden took a similar line ahead of the November US presidential elections, in which he released a tape blaming President
George W. Bush's policies in Iraq for continued terrorist attacks on US interests.
The CRS argued that the shift towards Iraq was a reflection of Mr bin Laden's "pragmatic messianism", in which his overall
goals - the expulsion of western forces and influences from the Muslim world, and the creation of a pan-Islamic state ruled by
religious law - remain constant, but his short-term goals shift.
The report notes that Mr bin Laden has, in the past, cited US troop presence in Saudi Arabia - since withdrawn - and the
continuing Arab-Israeli conflict as rallying cries, only to drop the causes in later appeals. Similarly, Mr bin Laden's earlier
broadcasts mentioned Iraq only on occasion, but analysts note that since a December tape in which the al-Qaeda leader
specifically embraced Mr al-Zarqawi, the Iraq insurgency leader, mentions of Iraq have increased.
There has also been a marked increase in references to economic targets, which analysts believe may be aimed at influencing
European and American public opinion.
Dominic Armstrong, head of research and intelligence at the private security group Aegis Defence Services, noted that the
London bombings included few "televisual" images, but appeared to have been intended to cause a maximum amount of
economic disruption, which appeared to be consistent with recent bin Laden exhortations about the economic vulnerabilities
of the US and its allies.
"Economic targeting has been absolutely key to al-Qaeda," Mr Armstrong said, noting that Mr bin Laden was well versed in
business from his family's background in the construction industry. "If anything, that's been bin Laden's prime contribution."
Despite the repeated mention of Iraq and economics, analysts emphasise that the tapes show the underlying ideology of
al-Qaeda continues to focus on ridding western influences from the Middle East.
That theme was repeated by Mr al-Zawahiri's broadcast on the al-Jazeera news network yesterday. "As [bin Laden] has
said, you will not dream of security until we live it as a reality in Palestine and your infidel armies leave Prophet Mohammed's
lands," he said.

Militant’s ‘Pakistan link’ under probe
LUSAKA, Aug 4: Zambian security services investigating a suspected British militant wanted by the United States have extended their probe to Pakistan through Interpol, a security source said on Thursday. Haroon Rashid Aswad’s deportation to Britain, initially expected by diplomats on Wednesday, has been put back to allow for more investigations into possible terrorist activities in Pakistan, the Zambian source said.
“Investigations have been extended to Pakistan through Interpol. We are verifying his possible connections with some militants involved in terrorist activities operating in Asia,” the source told Reuters.
The source added that it was not yet clear when Aswad would be extradited to Britain. Media reports have linked him to the July 7 London bombings but British police sources have said he is not thought to be involved. Instead he is likely to be extradited after arrival in Britain to the United States, where he is wanted on suspicions he tried to set up a militant training camp in Oregon.
Interpol said last week it had issued an arrest warrant on behalf of the United States which led to his detention. Zambian officials have said British security officials and representatives of the US Central Intelligence Agency are in Lusaka and that the British team has been allowed to interrogate Aswad.—Reuters

WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2005 – President Bush today dismissed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri's threats of more violence targeted toward the United States and Great Britain during a news conference at the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch.
Facing reporters alongside Columbian President Alvaro Uribe, who is visiting the United States, Bush said al-Qaeda's goal "is to drive us out of the broader Middle East."
During a videotaped broadcast on the Arab television network al-Jazzeera today, Zawahiri - second only to Osama bin Laden in the al Qaeda hierarchy -- allegedly said U.S. troops in Iraq would experience more deadly attacks.
Bush pointed out that Zawahiri is part of bin Laden's terrorist gang that attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.
"They're terrorists and killers," Bush said of al Qaeda and other violent extremists. Such groups "will kill innocent people," he pointed out, to "impose their dark vision on the world."
Bush asserted the terrorists would be defeated and brought to justice, also vowing the United States "will stay the course" in Iraq.
"Our troops will come home as soon as possible," Bush said, after Iraqi forces are prepared to fight the insurgency on their own.
"As Iraq stands up, our coalition will stand down," the president explained, noting that Iraqis want to live in a free society.
Zawahiri's message was released after the deaths in Iraq of 21 U.S. Marines over three days this week. Bush offered his condolences to friends and family members of the deceased servicemembers. "We mourn the loss of every fallen troop," the president said. The fallen Marines' sacrifice and that of other servicemembers killed in the war was "made in a noble cause," Bush declared. "We're defeating the terrorists in a place like Iraq so we don't have to face them here at home," he said.
The United States and its allies also are "spreading democracy and freedom to parts of the world that are desperate for democracy and freedom," Bush said.
