uly 11, 2005 -- The NYPD has disconnected cellphone service in all the city's vehicular tunnels since the London terror blasts to prevent anyone from detonating a bomb, authorities said yesterday.
Service will remain off until further notice, spokesmen for the Port Authority and Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.
PA spokesman Tony Ciavolella said the cutoff came "at the request of the NYPD." The PA operates the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
MTA spokesman Brian Dolan said a similar policy was enacted Thursday in the Brooklyn-Battery and Midtown tunnels.
A police source said disabling cellphones in the tunnels is a good security measure, but not a foolproof one.

You need to wake up and realize you are in a war. You do not get to continue life as normal in a war - no one does.
I sometimes wonder if some of the posters are trying to promote us not protecting ourselves.
Well - I don't buy it. You guys sound like the biggest crybabies I've ever seen.
Toughen up and quit your whining. Remember - your freedoms ARE BEING FOUGHT FOR AND YOU WILL HAVE TO JOIN IN THE BATTLE AND QUIT SITTING IN THE COACHING SEAT. YOU ALSO MIGHT TRY HELPING INSTEAD OF BEING OBSTACLES BECAUSE OF YOUR OWN PARANOIA.
You are the very same ones that are complaining because the borders are not protected, immigration moans and groans. But - if the war touches you in the least - you just try and make it a war for others - not you.
Lap-top outlawed? Yeah, if they are used to slaughter Americans maybe so. Afterall, that is what the government is for - to protect its citizens.
You guys have never had a war on your own shores and you just do not understand the concept of sacrifice to fight for liberty. You just expect the liberty given to you with no infringement of your life. Well, what about the soldiers? Do they get all of their personal rights? No, they sacrifice for our liberties.
Makes you guys here sound like big babies moaning and groaning because they cannot make a phone call during an attack. Just compare yourself to one of our men in Iraq and see how you look.
Oh, so you want to take pictures. Well, just think about that mother next to you. Maybe she wants to raise her kids and wants to get out of there alive.
Maybe you could just carry a polaroid camera and solve the whole thing. You get to take your pictures and the co-riders get to live another day.
Man, I should be a homeland security worker.
*gentle cough* I carry a digital camera...
Well - some of us have to sacrifice in war time. Why shouldn't you - or are you too dang soft and spoiled. War is for others - not you.
Good grief - grow up.
Well look at whom he called upon to deliver the message.
See my post #77.
BTW, why don't you go to work for Homeland security? Serious question.
Yeah. The best and the brightest. Not!
Thou art not alone. When I first started hearing about legislation against driving and cell-talking, I thought it was ridiculous. No more. I can't count the near-collisions I've had recently with morons yapping on phones who pay NO attention to what they're doing.
MM
More like the most violent and ignorant. Mo was illiterate though you probably know it I just like to say it.
Well, and I said the problem can be solved if you "change your life" just a little bit. Carry a polaroid if you have such a need for pictures. Then you will not risk the lives of the other riders and will allow Homeland Security to disrupt the operations of terrorists as needed.
Sounds like a win for all and you could probably get a medal for your sacrifice of the digital camera for a polaroid. And, just look at how you can tell your grandchildren of your sacrifice for the war effort.
yes...
but that is besides the point.
Not even Lincoln during a time of civil war randomly declared non battle zones as martial law. You're idealogy is what kept Stalin in power. It is the same fear that makes otherwise free thinking folks let the military run rough shod over rights.
And you act in a way that does not allow protection of any sort for citizens. Therefore, you act as the enemy against your neighbors.
You forget this is war, we are being attacked and resistence because you do not agree with the protective actions by the authorities risks the lives of others.
You either get out of the way and stand alone - but do not prevent the safe keeping of citizens and their ability to fight those attacking them.
Dissent all you want - but get the heck out of the way of others and fight your own battle with the terrorists. And, don't ask the military, the authorities to do any protecting of you.
And, Lincoln did not have terrorists coming into the cities solely to kill innocent citizens. If he had, he dang sure would have had military there to protect the citizens. Even those not wanting the protection.
How would you be as a soldier? You would resist every order, endangering your buddies and preventing the mission. You would second guess every order in effect abetting the enemy.
You will not convince me that we should all complain and moan when our little wishes are not followed to the letter. As I said before - many here wish us not to protect ourselves and I often wonder if they are indeed on our side. How very simple for the enemy to infiltrate chat sites and urge citizens to resist their own protectors (in the name of freedom). So much easier to kill them that way.
Well, I don't buy it.
Limiting personal freedoms on the vague chance that terrorists might use something atypical for them which they have not used before is stupid. If they had been proven to use cell phones before than rather than shut off cell phones I'd say leave them open but monitor signals, and conversations (you already seem to have ceded any need for rights so why not invade privacy right?). That could stop a terrorist attack. Turning them off let's them know they will already need to work round it. So all we know is that if terrorists use mobile radio devises to communicate on the subway they will be using an unknown non public system, likely difficult to impossible to trace.
Second. I am NOT a soldier nor are American citizens. Citizens, like goats, need not obey what they don't feel like. They're difficult to heard and control, and only a totalitariam regime would seek to so control the populace.
There is no reason to randomly restrict cell phone use at all in this situation. If you like randomly limiting personal freedoms I'd encourage ou to try living in China or North Korea, where they are happy to limit freedom arbitarily to facilitate the war plans of their wacky leader-generals.
Two points (And the people I'm rubbing them into know who they are, don't you?)
1) Terrorists do make dumb mistakes.
2) Under the right circumstances, a digital camera/cell phone is an effective weapon.
bump!
bump!
>2) Under the right circumstances, a digital camera/cell phone is an effective weapon.<
Not to mention an effective crime-stopper!
Thanks for the ping, null and void.
It's not a good idea to shut off cell phone service in subways or anywhere else an emergency can develop.
In a restaurant or theater, there are responsible people with copper connections that can call in an emergency- but not in a subway or tunnel.
Using an emergency call box in a tunnel means stopping and getting out of your car.
