'TERROR' CELLS KO'D IN TUNNELS
NY Post ^ | 7/11/05 | LARRY CELONA

uly 11, 2005 -- The NYPD has disconnected cellphone service in all the city's vehicular tunnels since the London terror blasts — to prevent anyone from detonating a bomb, authorities said yesterday.

Service will remain off until further notice, spokesmen for the Port Authority and Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.

PA spokesman Tony Ciavolella said the cutoff came "at the request of the NYPD." The PA operates the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.

MTA spokesman Brian Dolan said a similar policy was enacted Thursday in the Brooklyn-Battery and Midtown tunnels.

A police source said disabling cellphones in the tunnels is a good security measure, but not a foolproof one.

Drastic times call for drastic measures?

Waiting to hear it from the civil liberties whiners who will complain that this action infringes upon their rights to carry on their rather insignificant conversations.

We'll all be safer if yuppies can no longer drive through the Lincoln Tunnel with one hand on the wheel and the other hand on their cell phones.

I am one of those people who believe it is getting a little out of hand with cell phone use and driving.
Hands free will be better.

Actually this is only partially effective as they admit in the story.

What they really need to do is shut down subway service entirely. Of course the terrorists would find a way around that.

So what they really need to do is enact a hour curfew and force people to remain in their homes. That would sure work.

We'll teach those terrorists they can't disrupt our freedom-loving society.

"However the islamofacists used washing machine timers."

You mean like the ones found in the possession of the American Iraqi citizen in Baghdad? Wonder what happened to that case?

Cell phones can be a two edged sword, they can also keep authorities informed of what is going on, by victims trapped inside tunnels and building, in case of a hit.

Wonderful. Now if you have an emergency in the tunnel you can't call. I know it's needful, but I am getting pissed off that our freedoms and lives are being twisted by these Islamist pricks, and we won't REALLY tackle the problem, but paper it over with idiotic airline screening of 80 year old Grandma's etc.

As I recall there are emergency call boxes on the subway cars.

True- eliminating the source of the threat is the ultimate security solution.

I know it's needful

How is it needful? Bombs only go off when connected to cell phones? Just another example of the police state eliminating freedoms from its own citizens for no benefit at all other than for the politicians to strut around saying "see what we did to make you safe." Of course in NYC the sheep believe them.

At the same time, we are all supposed to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the authorities.

As long as it's not in a tunnel or subway, that'll work fine.

Great, the problem is that now you can't call a cop, or an ambulance. This is the dumbest idea since preventing honest citizens from having effective means for self defense (guns).
