We're supposed to have temps in the high 80's later this week and the rain which will cause a problem here in PA for those living in low-lying areas. The last heavy rain we had caused arguments in places like Lowe's, Home Depot, etc for people trying to get sump-pumps for their homes and the fire companies were working overtime as you can imagine, but nothing close to what the people in your states have gone through.
It's definately possible we see an eye wall replacement before it comes ashore, and if it happens at the right time... winds COULD come down a bit, but I wouldn't count on it. The saving grace is the relatively small CDO with Dennis, hopefully the 140 winds will be confined to a small area.
We need a break.
Safest place with the best weather I've lived was on Oahu. No major storms; no poisonous snakes. That said, I've been thru many hurricanes/typhoons in Miami, Guam and Okinawa.
What!
IIRC that's the hurricane party apartment complex -- they showed the party people on TV before the storm, the party was on the 'safe second story'. Our house was about 5 miles from there. We weren't there, it was rented, but the house only suffered minor damage. Our house was inland behind the railroad tracks which were built on a sand dune that acted like a 20 foot high sand berm parallel to and all the way down the Mississippi coast.
I think all but one person at the hurricane party were never found.
MAX FL WIND 131 KT NE QUAD 11:40:30 Z SLP EXTRAPOLATED FROM 10,000FT MESSAGE DELAYED..AIRCRAFT SYSTEM BOMBED
The 140 MPH was extrapolated from thier other data as the sensors that were recording failed. Hopefully the extrapolation was right, but the pressure staying at 930 supports the earlier 145 MPH wind speed. I am surprised NHC lowered it without an actual windspeed reading, but if they have confidence int he extrapolated data who am I to argue.
There is no nature in Arizona and New Mexico.
;-)
At the end of Cat 3.
Quit giving away my recipe for hurricane repellant.
I wouldn't live in AZ or NM because of the way the politics ar turning, but then again.. I'm stuck in CA.
Big difference between calm and 25 mph.
Ahhh, those were the days.
Did you get rain? I've been so busy with hurricanes preps I haven't had time to keep up with anything else.
Speaking of Camille and the damage it did, let's not forget Andrew and what IT did (other than raise my insurance rates).
I went down to Homestead with a friend to help out his parents one day and couldn't believe my eyes. Each block was indistinguishable from the next. There were no street signs left so you had no idea where you were. Every house in this neighborhood was literally toothpicks. It was so sad.
Since then, in some municipalities in FL they paint the name of the streets on the corners of the curbing so that when the street signs end up 20 miles away, you can still find your way around.
Also there was a mall (a FULL mall) - forget it's name that basically disappeared after the storm.
The only good news is that it appears Dennis may end up just east of Pensacola, that should spare it the full brunt of the storm.
I think it will end up coming in just east of Pensacola... which would be good for Mobile Bay, since winds will be offshore. But, like you said... tough to tell with the wobbles.

Unless you like heat, sand and rattlesnakes...oh, and don't forget the scorpions. No thanks!!
Ahem -- That's 131 *knots*, not 131 mph. 131 knots = 150.75 mph...
