Five people in Washington have contracted food poisoning after eating cake batter-flavored ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery stores.
The victims -- a woman in King County, a man in Whatcom County, two girls in Snohomish County and a woman in Spokane -- were infected with a rare strain of the salmonella bacteria called salmonella typhimurium, according to the state Department of Health.
Cold Stone Creamery is voluntarily recalling the ice cream from its stores throughout the country.
A teenage girl in Snohomish County was hospitalized briefly, but has recovered, according to state officials.
A total of 15 cases of salmonellosis related to the ice cream shops have been reported in four states, the others being Oregon, Minnesota and Ohio, during the past month.
Between 600 and 800 cases of salmonella poisoning are reported in Washington every year.
The symptoms of salmonella poisoning, which usually develop within 12 to 72 hours after infection, include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Ech. I've yet to try Cold Stone. The concept is just gross.
What do you know about this?
Cold Stone is great ice cream. They don't sell it here, but I've had it while visiting my sister in Wisconsin.
72 hours is a long time for onset of symptoms.
"In 1985, over 17,000 people in Illinois were poisoned by Salmonella typhimurium, and 14 died. The source of this food poisoning epidemic was contaminated milk. It was discovered that during the bottling process, contaminated raw milk had been mixed accidentally with milk that had already been pasteurized.
In the United States, the largest outbreak of food poisoning recorded to date occurred in 1994, when 3.4 million people in forty different states ate ice cream that was contaminated with salmonella from unpasteurized eggs. The ice cream itself hadnt been made with unpasteurized eggs, but the tanker truck that transported the ice cream premix to the manufacturer had previously contained unpasteurized liquid eggs that had been contaminated with salmonella. The tankers were supposed to have been thoroughly cleaned before they were filled with the ice cream premix, but inspectors found that several tankers had not been cleaned adequately. They also discovered cracks in the lining of at least five of the trucks.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, of the 3.4 million people who ate the contaminated ice cream, 224,000 of them suffered from salmonella enteriditis, a form of food poisoning that causes fever, chills, and bloody diarrhea."

Cold Stone is great.
We think the ice cream is good, but several months ago, Consumer Reports reported on those types of ice cream, and the Cold Stone brand was not rated that highly.
Interesting. They probably asked the wrong people:). Actually, ice cream parlors around here are a dime a dozen. Almost every town has at least one. I took my first grade class on a field trip to Cold Stone and they liked it quite a bit--it put me out 43 bucks though:).
Yeah, Cold Stone is not cheap. And their portion size is HUGE. This may be why I don't go there often -- I'm usually not able to finish even their smallest portion size and I hate to pay four bucks for something I probably won't finish. But sometimes it's just too tempting.
(And thanks for your dedication to giving your students an enriching experience!)
Yes, they aren't cheap. So I don't go there often either. But I can polish off even their bigger sizes fairly easily if I'm in the mood (followed by a big migraine).
It was part of a bigger field trip where we went to a bank and a bottled water place too. It was fun. I love teaching the kids and have had many wonderful experiences.
It's expensive, not that good, and takes too long. I believe the annoying singing by the staff is what made the customers nasueous, however.
...Will make you "Cold Stone" dead.
And halibutella, also.
Leni
I believe the annoying singing by the staff....
Yeah, I'll agree to that, though the last time I went one of the workers could half carry a tune.
Don't forget mahi mahibella, or troutella, or biuegillella, or carpella, or catfishfella, or umbrella, or freeze a jolly good fella, or cinderella, or cruella, or....

You're killing me. Blue Bell is the best, but its not sold in my area and ordering ice cream through FED EX seems extreme.
