Miss. students make quilt for Laura Bush
Tuesday, June 28, 2005 1:28 PM CDTST. MARTIN (AP) - Some Gulf Coast (Mississippi) fifth-graders are sending First Lady Laura Bush a queen-sized quilt in July.
The students from the gifted-education program at St. Martin Upper Elementary School helped produce the quilt through the Winning Instruction for Neat Gifted Students program. It is one of three quilts made based on two years of study about the American education system. The project started when students were in the fourth grade.
The quilt was sewn by Ellen Dixon of Ocean Springs.
Gifted-education teachers Loretta Wright and Sue Nicholson will present the quilt to U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., on July 7. Lott will deliver the quilt to Bush.
Wright said students started the project during fourth grade.
"The children didn't sew the quilt, but they made the squares," Wright said. "The quilt has about 28 squares where they wrote a poem about a subject or area in education science, math, history, folk art, or break time, cafeteria, sports, anything and everything about education."
The students used those studies to determine square sizes, drawings and other features. The students added their signatures once the poems were written on the squares
"I thought it was very good and fun because it's teaching us a lesson about appreciating what we have," said Brittany Cox, 11.
Kyle Murphy, 10, wrote a poem about sports.
"It was a lot of fun. I learned a lot from it. I learned how to write poetry, and the history of the school system of America. We learned how to work together as a group."
In the meantime, while our President, First Lady, and our wonderful Armed Forces do everything they can for this great nation, the Hollywood Left never rests in its anti-American activities -- especially when they are overseas. Robert Redford is in the Czech Republic for the 40th International Film Festival where, during an interview, he said he regretted that U.S. journalists were not investigating the administration of President Bush. (Has anyone besides me noticed how Redford's face has aged just like the picture of Dorian Gray?)

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Excerpts from the President's Address to the Nation, Ft. Bragg, NC, June 28, 2005:
Some wonder whether Iraq is a central front in the war on terror. Among the terrorists, there is no debate. Hear the words of Osama Bin Laden: "This Third World War is raging" in Iraq. "The whole world is watching this war." He says it will end in "victory and glory, or misery and humiliation."
The lesson...is clear: The terrorists can kill the innocent, but they cannot stop the advance of freedom. The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of September the 11th, if we abandon the Iraqi people to men like Zarqawi, and if we yield the future of the Middle East to men like Bin Laden. For the sake of our nation's security, this will not happen on my watch.
America has done difficult work before. From our desperate fight for independence to the darkest days of a Civil War, to the hard-fought battles against tyranny in the 20th century, there were many chances to lose our heart, our nerve, or our way. But Americans have always held firm, because we have always believed in certain truths. We know that if evil is not confronted, it gains in strength and audacity, and returns to strike us again. We know that when the work is hard, the proper response is not retreat, it is courage.
After September the 11th, 2001, I told the American people that the road ahead would be difficult, and that we would prevail. Well, it has been difficult -- and we are prevailing. Our enemies are brutal, but they are no match for the United States of America, and they are no match for the men and women of the United States military.
Amen to that.
Pinging you to the Saturday Dose. Happy 4th of July, everyone.
Since there are no new photos of the President or his family available today, a retrospective of past July 4th celebrations seems appropriate. This joyous two-fer celebrated both July 4, 2001 and GWB's 55th birthday, July 6, 2001. Arm in arm with Philadelphia Mayor John Street, President Bush passes out birthday cake at an urban block party in Philadelphia July 4, 2001.

Thanks for the dose, Wolfstar
Photo of the War (now Defense) Department's North Wing, July 4, 1890. This (in my opinon, ugly) building, renamed the Old Eisenhower Executive Office Building, is now part of the White House complex and houses the Vice President's ceremonial office.
On July 4, 1826, 50 years to the day after signing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died. In their long lives, Jefferson and Adams were friends, then bitter rivals, then friends again. As Adams was near death, he believed Jefferson outlived him. His last words were, "Jefferson lives." However, Jefferson had actually passed away a few hours earlier.
Love to see these photos from the Philly celebration!
My local liberal rag would NEVER print them!
