Hearing on Fox News
I am going to check c-span tonight, because with the news on all of the news channels being about O'Connor's retirement, c-span MIGHT repeat the speeches that were given on the Senate floor and the pressers tonight....
You might want to check also...BUT, if I see there is replay of Warner in the Senate or the presser, I will send you a freepmail/ping you...
Okay?
'I like Ted Olsen too. But I have been reading quite a lot lately that his Solicitor General's office had prepared an Amicus (friend of the court) Brief in favor of the recent City of New London eminent domain takings case. It was never filed with the courts only because the Administration thought it would be unpopular politically.
Also, I believe that Judges are required to recuse themselves from any case where they have ever served as a legal adviser to the government. Having been Solicitor General for five years and through a contentious period, Olson has given a lot of advice on a lot of issues that are near and dear to us so he would be recusing himself from the very cases where we would need him the most. (The same might be true for Gonzalez but in my opinion we would be glad that he recessed himself because he leans liberal). With either Olsen or Gonzalez we would only get half a justice.'
thanks you for the info presented so well. Maybe I don't like that idea, anymore....
YES! ;-D
If The Great One declines, then Janice Rogers Brown.
I am watching Hairball, and Chrissy had on Alan Simpson, supposedly a REpublican, ex-senator...
He just told Chrissy that if President Bush nominates a conservative nominee "that the right wing" would approve of, he/she won't have a chance of getting it...
But, he said, if President Bush picks a "moderate conservative that "rational REpublicans and religious people" would like, then he has a much better chance...
Then, he said that he had been given trouble as a Republican because he is pro-choice, and pro-gay/lesbian full rights...and that President Bush would have a hard time having a nominee confirmed unless that nominee is not so conservative on social issues....
Okay, folks, I don't know about ya'll, but Simpson just put me in the right-wing irrational Republican party...
Boy, Chrissy is really pushing for Alberto Gonazalez, so I do believe that my instinct NOT to have him, is right on target~!!
If that's true I rather doubt that would earn him a SC nomination, just a guess, LOL.
Plus she just went through the Senate, what are they going to say now? The Dems can't oppose her without looking like they want to bulldoze everybodys' house for fun and profit.
If the nominee is not a woman and if she's not Burmese on one side and Swedish on the other, I can't support her ... regardless of politics. It's only the Burmese/Swede lineage that creates truly conservative judges.
...The Dems are gonna try to filibuster the nominee ANYWAY...
...Isn't it way PAST time for some 'hardball', Dr. Frist...???!!!
I have had a fair amount of respect for Simpson over the years. My limited exposure to him had me fooled.
I am baffled how these folks can destroy any respect you had for them in less than two sentences.
What a shame. At least I know this guy for what he is now.
You are SO right!
Estrada should be on his short list.
Ala Simpson's father, the late Governor and Senator Milward Simpson, voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The son, Alan Kooi Simpson, has been moving left over the years to atone for his father's embarrassing vote in 1964.
Fireworks be d@mned. It's the weekend of the FOURTH!
...Let the battle begin.
(...and I DO like Rogers-Brown for this, too.)
At one time a typical WY Republican would have challenged one to a fist fight if he denigrated the once popular Alan Simpson, last reelected in 1990. Simpson tried to be Republican leader at one time. He retired early in 1997, replaced by Mike Enzi.
Departing Justice O'Connor has written (with her brother) a book about growing up on an AZ ranch. I would very much like to read this but will not at this time because of her disappointing service on the high court. I just don't have enough respect for her to read what is probably a fine book.
You all have got to watch the replay of Hairball tonight..
There is just too much stuff I heard that ya'll should hear..
Chrissy had on a couple of people (I don't remember their names) and one of them said that even though Bush's advisors are adamant about nominating a strict constructionist, he doesn't think that Bush cares...he made it sound like Bush just cares that he "has a legacy", but doesn't really care if the person just interprets the constitution, instead of "making new law"...
Chrissy just about had a happy, happy, joy, joy, stroke over that remark...
Also, Senator George Allen was a studio guest and was VERY GOOD...
Chrissy is on this kick that O'Connor is a Republican and that is why she "made" Bush president in 2000!!!
They just can't get over 2000!
