Saw War of the Worlds last night. Did anybody else notice the cool cameo appearance, right at the end, by...Gene Barry? He played Dr. Clayton Forrester, the hero of George Pal's version of the story. He was part of the group standing on the steps in the house in Boston--the white-haired guy on the left. He must be 80-something, but he looked pretty good.
I remember that one but am just as fuzzy on the details.
Yes. Ann Sheridan was the grandmother at the end.
Now I'm gonna have to see it again just to confirm this.
I had a friend who had one of these.
WooHoo!! Finally I know where I've heard Dr. Forrester's name! I always loved the original WOTW w/ Gene Barry...and I love MST3K...now I understand the linkage....(great screen capture, BTW)
Only if they have a cameo with Jack Wild! I had a niece who had a mad crush on the Kroft poster boy. Her brother swore Wild was gay. Wonder what ever happened to the lad?
Had to look it up but it was "People" and the other was Crime Magazine.
OK my interest was peaked and I googled it up.
Barry played a conservationist that was in a car wreck and knocked out and wakes up in a later world where people live underground. Here is a spotty blurb on the episode;
Originally aired: Friday January 15, 1971 on NBC
Writer: Philip Wylie
Director: Steven Spielberg
Guest Stars: Sharon Farrell (Sandrelle) , Severn Darden (Cameron) , Barry Sullivan (Dana Bigelow) , Paul Stewart (Dr. Rubas) , Edmund O'Brien (Bergman) , Regis Cordic (Chairman) , Louise Latham (Helen) , Geoffrey Lewis (Bates) , Jason Wingreen (Hammond) , Michael C. Gwynne (Dr. Parker) , Stuart Nisbet (Dr. Simmons) , Gloria Nanon (Dr. Arnold) , Phil Montgomery (Keeger) , Walt Davis (Technician) , Alicia Bond (Dr. Barton)
Publisher Glenn Howard (GB)is suddenly whisked away from his plush office in 1971. He finds himself in a world beneath the Earth's surface, circa 2017. The powers-that-be in this subterranean world refuse to answer Howard's many questions as to what has happened on the surface.
***Uhhh .... who is Gene Barry?***
Among the ledgends of the West,
One name stands out above the rest,
The man who had the fastest gun,
His name was Batt, Batt Masterson.
Dam! Beat me to it!
If my teen's reaction is any indicator, you're in for a treat. He's a film buff and has seen and enjoyed some real creepfests (e.g., "The Ring"). He saw the new "War of the Worlds" last night and says it's unbelievably frightening: "You're on the edge the whole freakin' movie!" Also says that they really pushed the envelope of a PG-13 rating.
***Saw War of the Worlds last night. ***
There is another NEW version of WAR OF THE WORLDS that does not have T C in it. I have not seen it yet but it is for sale in some video stores. It was a "direct to video store" movie.
Remember Susan St. James was the one character who linked the three "NOTG" divisions. She played what was then called a "Girl Friday" named Peggy -- I think Peggy Maxwell -- it's too late for me to look it up. You were also mentioning old TV westerns earlier -- remember "Shotgun Slade"? It was weird, it used jazz as its background music. One of the all-time great TV Western themes was "Lawman" -- John Russell as Dan Troop. One of the many Warner Brothers hits, like "Cheyenne" and "Bronco Layne" and "Sugarfoot" and "Maverick." I loved those shows.
I didn't see Ann Sheridan in the IMDB listing of cast members, though Gene Barry is there. His character is not identified, though.
"War of the Worlds" is rated PG-13. Much of the earth's population is wiped out, leaving very little time for sex or bad language."
