Bushmaster .308 Rifle
Gun Blast ^ | 14 July 2004 | Jeff Quinn

The Bushmaster .308 differs from the typical AR in a few of its controls. While the forward assist and safety are normal AR type controls, the bolt release is at the bottom front of the trigger guard, and is ambidextrous, having a mirror-image release on each side. This is an excellent design for the bolt release, and it is easily reached with the trigger finger of either a right-handed or left-handed shooter. The magazine release is in the normal AR position, but also has an ambidextrous twin on the opposite side of the receiver. The upper and lower receivers are forged, and are well-fitted. The twenty inch barrel has a twist rate of one turn in ten inches. The gas block has attachment rails machined into the top and sides to accommodate sights and accessories.

One of the best features of the Bushmaster .308 is its magazine. Unlike most of their competition, Bushmaster is supplying its rifles with twenty-round magazines. They are able to do this because they designed the rifle to use the readily available, cheap, and reliable surplus FAL rifle magazines.

I likes this one VEPR but it kicks hard and mags are pricey.

I shoot a colt A/R 5.56mm NATO. Been thinking about going with a bigger caliber.

A few weeks ago I watched a fellow shooter put all ten rounds of military match ammo in a four inch ring at 100 yards offhand with one of those using only the iron sights.

Hell, I did that with my CMP Garand right out of the box.

Thanks, I'll stick to the M1A, since it uses M14 mags as well. My next rifle is this: SOCOM16

I would welcome such a thing except for my concern that the jack-booted-thugs at the BATFE would come to my home, kill my pets and children, and burn my house to the ground while claiming that I was attempting to make one of your malfunctioning firearms operate full-auto.

Oh ... and I don't really have the right tools.

The first firearm I ever owned was a S&W 9mm pistol which wouldn't function correctly. I sent it to S&W and it still didn't work. It was a used gun and the dealer said he would guarantee proper operation. When I insisted that he take it back he was the most unhappy man I have ever seen in a gun store. I wish I had felt more qualified then to work on it. It's the only gun I have ever sold and I won't do that again.

Why did they pull that thread? It was interesting and not really contentious?

" I own an AR-10...unreliable POS. I'm dumping it ASAP."

My thought exactly when I saw this article. If I could trade my AR-10 for a reliable .308 Bushmaster clone I would do so in a heartbeat. Mine has been sitting in a safe for the last four years. I got tired of clearing failure to ejects and trying all the innovations that Armalite claims will solve the problem. When you pay $1500 dollars for a rifle and about $60 per mag (which you have to modify yourself) you expect not to be embarressed at the range sitting next to guy shooting a knock off gun that fires all day long.

Apparently a complaint was lodged by the source.

The military has been ordering a lot of 6.8 x 43 ammunition. The round really packs a punch out to about 500 meters from a sixteen inch barrel. I have heard that they are going to make the switch from 5.56 x 45 to 6.8 x 43 within the next ten years. Phase it in eventually.

Until then I really hope they start issuing the 77 grain 5.56 x 45 to our troops. It has about 100 meters more effective range than the 62 grain 5.56 x 45 ammunition.
