A suicide car bomber slammed into a U.S. military convoy in Fallujah, killing two Marines, a Pentagon spokesman said Friday. Three Marines and a sailor were missing after the attack.
CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports that five female Marines are said to be dead, according to officials. They are members of a supply unit who were being driven into Fallujah to assist in searching local women for hidden weapons when their vehicle, which was equipped with armor, was struck by the bomber.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said another 13 Marines were wounded in the Thursday night attack and said some women were among the casualties.
The car bomber targeted troops assigned to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, an earlier military statement said. Fallujah, the Anbar province town 40 miles west of Baghdad, was the scene of a large-scale campaign in November by U.S. troops to rout militants.
An earlier report also had said six Marines were killed.

This happens when you let the enemy shape the battlefield AND the PR war...Female suspects.. EASY..halt them at rifle range, make them strip...we have FIVE of ours dead on the altar of "sensitivity"
Precisely.
I heard about this on the radio news a little while ago---
and I know that I shouldn't feel any "different" that it is women instead of men Marines, and I really don't except that for so many to have been hit at once, is just awful...
From what I heard, they were on their way to relieve other women Marines at checkpoints, because they are at the checkpoints to search women that are going through the checkpoints...
This is yet again an example of the US "being thoughtful, and sensitive to Iraqi and Muslims feelings"---that seems to have cost us lives of troops...
Of course, DICK Durbin might lump them in with Nazis, also, because they were going to be mean and search people...
If they had armor on the car, then they didn't have enough armor. Also, they should clear the roads whenever a military vehicle passes...like in the old days, when the King's carriage went down the road, all the peasants knelt down in submission...obviously for the King's safety.
Someone might want to ask Dick Durbin how many Nazi women were killed in fighting because the Nazis were sensitive to the cultures of the people they destroyed.
Yeah, that looks like what we did to the Muslims, Dick. Looks just like Gitmo, doesn't it, you bastard.
Looks like Fallujah has relapsed.
The Pentagon needs to fear that the jihadis have studied their history. This war is tottering at home (which is all that counts). Just look at ALL the polls.
If the jihadis want it to tip their way, they need to launch a Tet-like offensive which shocks everyone with its scope and boldness. They don't have to win the attack--just attempting it is enough.
If the information I saw earlier was correct, then they weren't traveling in a "car" -- it was a seven-ton vehicle.
There isn't enough armor in the world to adequately protect a vehicle from a large explosive, and it's about time we got over our delusions about this and admit it.
When they made women into combat marines, I felt good, because that meant we were all equal. I treasured that self-esteem.
But these guerrillas have killed those women, and this fills me with BAD feelings. I'm not supposed to have bad feelings, because having GOOD feelings is a new right of the new century.
Can someone here help me out? I'm feeling....confused...
I'm beginning to think the guerrillas might not be cooperating with the New Agenda.
Am I missing something here?
Do you think the bomber driving that car got an earful from Al-Jezzera about how a US Senator was compairing the US to murderous regeims before he was sent off on his mission?
If the Pentagon didn't consider that scenario as a possibleprobable outcome before a single U.S. soldier was put on the ground over there, then the entire U.S. Department of Defense should be prosecuted for dereliction of duty.
When, oh when, are we going to take off the gloves and fight this thing as wars should be fought? Much of the wanton slaughter of our troops could be avoided if we truly did use "shock and awe" instead of just talking about it. Looks like we've lost our will; if that's the case, then let's fold up our tents and limp home with our tails between our legs, cowering and waiting for them to launch another 9/11.
Let's be careful not to make the Gitmo prisoners feel bad about it, though.
'then the entire U.S. Department of Defense should be prosecuted for dereliction of duty.'
Hyperbolic nonsense.
The performance of the high command in the Pentagon has been awful. Up until recently, the people in charge have been political generals whose principle claim to generalship is that they haven't made serious errors during their careers, or pissed off anyone important.
I have some confidence in Peter Pace, the new JCS chief, though. Then again, I come from a Marine Corps family, and am prejudiced.
Yes, I feel that we should be tougher. I think we're being too nice.
