24 Hours Later, 3 NJ Children Remain Missing

June 23, 2005 9:18 p.m. EST

Mount Ephraim, NJ (AHN) - Three children remain missing in a suburb of Camden, New Jersey with an intense search on for the kids who vanished Wednesday night.

11-year-old Anibel Cruz, 6-year-old Daniel Agosto, and 5-year-old Jesstin Pagan went missing around 5pm Wednesday night outside of a home they were playing in front of. The families of the missing children searched frantically for the children for four hours and then called police.

Cruz's aunt Jennifer Calo says, "We've done everything we can. The only thing we can do now is hope and pray we'll turn around and they'll be walking down the sidewalk and saying, 'We're here.'"

Jesstin's mother, Jessica Pagan says, "I turned my back for two seconds and they were gone."

Police launched a massive search in nearby wooded areas where bloodhounds tracked the scent of one of the boy's clothing. Helicopters and boats were uses along the Delaware River all day Thursday in hopes of a clue. Officials are also going door to door as well as checking abandoned houses and local train tracks.

Cruz's parents are especially concerned for the health of Anibel due to a serious mental condition the child suffers from that requires medication.

Police are not ruling out an abduction or foul play saying "There's no tangible evidence we've received to say, 'Yeah, there's foul play here, but it's possible."

One time my daughter who was about 12 at the time decided to storm off after we had a bit of a spat.

After a period of time (it wasn't that long), I began to search the house. I could not find her. Anywhere.

It was a old and rainy day. I thought she might have left the house and walked out in the rain to the library a few blocks away. Or to a thrift shop about 5 blocks away.

Immediately I got in my car and searched both places-- twice. I got back and it was about 1/2 hour after she "dissappeared."

I was ready to call the police.

Then I went to the basement one last time and found her asleep on a pile of clothes. I must have walked past her twice.

1/2 hr was the max for me. If I hadn't any clue where she might have gone I would have called as soon as the whole house was checked.

Fortunately she really would have never taken off; it was just one of those weird things that happens sometimes.

This happened another time with my youngest girls who got into this little game of "hiding." My second youngest (4 at the time) did this and I searched the house. 5 minutes not knowing where she was was too much. I was ready to call police and then we found her hiding under the couch.

Believe me, she has QUITE a talking to. My heart about fell out of me.

Anyway, 4 hours is a long time. Too long for me

Regarding media coverage: these are not nice, pretty-looking middle Americans. Too bad they don't deserve the same media coverage as a lost boy scout or a blonde girl in Aruba......

Well I don't know where you live but I would NEVER let my children out playing in some park for 4 hours and not know where they are, not at 7, not at 15.

I did that when I was a kid in the '60's. Today there are just too many perverts juiced up by the internet and Satan. I am not taking chances that my kids become a statistic.

I do not think you are being wise but that is just my opinion. I watch my kids like a hawk even in my own backyard.

I've been hearing about it on Fox all evening. Not 24/7, but to say it's not being reported just isn't true. Court TV had a long segment on it today also.

They didn't wait for anything. You had 3 groups of parents, family members, and friends searching all over the place to make sure the kids were not hiding. Something is seriously wrong for not 1 not 2 but 3 kids to go missing in minutes.

The authorities have NOT called out search and rescue teams yet. I know this for a fact. They have police and firefighters looking. My search team is set to deploy tomorrow. Wish us luck!

They may have gotten themselves locked inside a car trunk, abandoned room, etc. It's going to be a long search.

To get coverage the family has to contact the news media. The news media didn't go looking for the story of the blonde in Aruba. The family pushed it.

Those are darn sweet looking kids. It's all about the family and friends making it an issue. It's not ethnic.

Heh, let me put it this way...the park my kid plays in is the same one Laci Peterson walked her dog in every day (no joke).

Personally, I just refuse to be so paranoid that I deprive my children of the same fun I had as a kid. Sure, there are a LOT of wierdo's in the world, and I would NEVER allow my son to go into that park alone, but with a group of friends? No problem. And around my own neighborhood? I wouldn't even think twice about it.

Kids get their first crack at independence and responsibility by playing away from their parents. You're not doing them any favors by depriving them of that.

I give them independence in other ways. But not at the expense of their safety.
I also have small children.

I am not in your shoes and you are not in mine. Do what you want with your kids!

Holy Father,

We acknowledge Your sovereignty and power. We know that You are well aware of everything that has taken place in the lives of these three young children. We pray, Lord, that You would guide these children back home and that You would shelter them in Your arms. Father, nothing is too difficult for You! We pray for Your mercy in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

She spared the last 3 mins of her show before Fox turned off the lights? What did she say?

My cat once hid in the closet for four solid days. I searched for him and searched for him. There was a cat who lived up the street that looked almost exactly like him. On day two it was sitting outside my window. I took the cat in the house, I thought it was mine, so did my daughter. But something wasn't right.

On the fourth day "Normy" emerged from the closet! I was an unintended cat thief! I set the doppleganger free. It was all a very strange experience. That cat had never done anything like that before or since that time.
