Hillary branded liar and a lesbian

Roland Watson, Washington

June 23, 2005

HILLARY Clinton has denounced a lurid new book that brands her a serial liar and which Republicans hope will derail her White House ambitions.

The book directly challenges Senator Clinton's account of the Monica Lewinsky affair and is littered with claims about the former first lady's relationship with her husband, her sexuality and her ruthless quest for the Oval Office. Senator Clinton's officials said the book, published yesterday, was "full of blatant and vicious fabrications, contrived by someone who writes trash for cash".

The book is by Edward Klein, formerly a senior journalist with Newsweek and The New York Times, who makes no secret of his dislike for the Clintons.

It is already being embraced by conservatives mobilising against the New York senator's seemingly inevitable run for the presidency in 2008.

The provocatively titled book - The Truth About Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It and How Far She'll Go to Become President - provides Democrats with a foretaste of the scrutiny, muck-raking or otherwise, to which Senator Clinton will be subjected if she wins the party's nomination.

Klein asserts that she knew for two years that her husband was having an affair with Ms Lewinsky, the intern whose liaisons with Mr Clinton led to his impeachment.

Senator Clinton has insisted that her husband told her shortly before he confessed to the Starr investigation.

"I could hardly breathe," she wrote in her autobiography. "Gulping for air, I started crying and yelling at him."

Her version is not credible, writes Klein. Senator Clinton had deployed a legion of loyal aides in the White House "to keep an eye on her sex-addicted husband", according to the author. He quotes a former White House aide as saying that "everyone", including the Secret Service and Senator Clinton, knew about Ms Lewinsky.

At the time, she described the pursuit of her husband and his eventual impeachment over the affair as the result of a "vast right-wing conspiracy".

Klein's unsubstantiated theory is that an admission by Senator Clinton that she knew of her husband's escapades would have confirmed the worst suspicions "that her marriage was a political arrangement rather than a true love match".

More salacious claims rest on flimsier foundations. Klein uses an anonymous source to claim that the Clintons' daughter, Chelsea, was conceived shortly after Mr Clinton told a late-night group of fellow holidaymakers in Bermuda that he was going to "rape" his wife.

The book alleges that Mr Clinton, flush with millions from his blockbuster biography last year, conducted an affair with a "stunning" divorcee in her early 40s who lived near the Clintons in New York.

Klein also resurrects ancient rumours about Senator Clinton's sexuality. Without substantiation, he relates suspicions in Arkansas that she was a lesbian or "asexual".

A broader theme, certain to crop up repeatedly, is that Senator Clinton is changing her formerly left-wing spots to try to occupy the centre ground.

Klein calls himself an independent with no political axe to grind. "I didn't go into this book ... with an agenda, " he says, but also states: "As far as I'm concerned, we've already had the Clinton presidency for its full constitutional eight years.

"I do not want to see her become president of the United States. I think that would be a dangerous thing; to have another darkly paranoid president like Richard Nixon, who has an enemies list and is inclined to do illegal things."

re: which Republicans hope will derail her White House ambitions)))

Which was not written by anyone sympathetic to the GOP. I'm a little worried about this book--it's like a pre-election vaccination...It's like she wants it all out there for people to get bored with well in advance of her push to the WH.

When the Swift boat came out, the media immediately said it was orchestrated by Republican. It was pointed out to them that one of the authors was a democrat that had supported Edwards and Gore....Sort of took away their fire....IIRC the initial research was done here on FR or at least by a freeper, possibly Interesting Times.

The "bias/source" of the author/publication does make a difference to some of us.

I don't like this book. It's almost as if Hillary paid this Klein guy to write a sloppily researched, easily refuted, over-the-top screed so that she could play the victim card all the way to Pennsyvania Ave.

Agreed, good grief, I'll believe she's a liar, I'll believe she's after the White House (by any means) but I always thought the lesbian thing was a joke. If I wanted my book NOT to be taken seriously, I'd write that she was a lesbian.

What evidence is provided that Republicans hope will derail her White House ambitions???

First and foremost question to ask!!

Which repubs have stated that they want to derail her WH ambitions? Your exactly right, in this article or review, too much is written about what Repubs want to happen!

The dems really are starting to get not only more foolish by letting the far left take over the party, they're just getting plain sloppy!

The Clintons are all about smearing people, while claiming to be the injured party.

A number of people started digging into Kerry's past last January. I set up WinterSoldier.com to organize and present what I came up with, and lots of other people found it and joined in. One of them was Jerry Corsi, who introduced me to John O'Neill. I worked with them on "Unfit for Command" and contributed material for the Swift Vet TV ads. Nick Danger and I also created and managed SwiftVets.com. It was quite a ride...

< sarcasm >
I did get tired of those long conference calls every morning with Karl Rove, though.

Some nice lesbian neighbors of mine told me this story: one of them was among a group invited to the White House for a reception concerning an educational program aimed at young women, with which one of them was involved. Hitlery made a brief appearance and shook hands with them. My lesbian neighbor described Hitlery as, "Friendly. A bit too friendly". I recall thinking at the time, "Well, that pretty much sums it up"

Sorry, but some years ago my lesbian neighbors told me that Hitlery was "a bit too friendly" when they had occasion to meet her. See my post # 51

Yeah well, when you have some real evidence let me know. I still say, unless I had some concrete evidence, I wouldn't put it in a book if I wanted to be taken seriously.

And your "lesbian" neighbors thought she was "too friendly"? Hmmm, just don't know bout that.

If you want to know who's a closet gay, ask a gay. Actually, my neighbors are very nice and take wonderful care of their property. The fact that they openly told me this about Hitlery was significant IMHO.

Now we have proof....It's all Rove's fault! Just was trying to make the point that sometimes folks will listen to others who have similar background IE party affiliation.....Have you read the book? Do you know if the "nonpartisan" (wink wink) Klein is a registered voter or donor?....Would be interested to know.....

BTW How are you and yours doing? Been to any good piano bars lately?

The book is a boring tome of innuendo, supposition and a total rehash of old news. There is nothing new or sensational in it. If Vanity Fair runs excerpts from it, which I have read, one must suspect the entire motive of its author and publication.

I heard Ed Klein on Sean Hannity's radio show on tuesday. Klein cannot answer basic questions regarding the authenticity of his facts.

This book is a total setup to lure conservative thinking Americans into a real nasty situation. There is no conservative groundswell behind this book and there shouldn't be.

I have seen it reported that the Right Wing believes that this is the Knock Out Punch of Hillary. Don't believe it for one minute. I say don,t fall into this mud hole because there are a lot of dirty people down there.

I would hope that conservatives stay away from this issue and recognize that the book is a total piece of garbage. The salient points of the book are available in Vanity Fair and on the Internet. They aren't worth reading.

And don't even think of comparing Ed Klein to the Swift Boat Vets. There is no moral or ethical equivalence.

Haven't seen the Hillary book yet, and I don't know much about Klein's background. It sounds like it may be too tabloid to have much impact, though.

My piano playing has gotten rusty -- I keep trying to hit a nonexistent space bar...

You are correct and that has been the dominant opinion here and your advice (stay away) is indeed the wisest course to take.

My sigh in #55 was over the highlighting of the pertinant portion of the article: The bad old VRWC is out to get HRC.

From what's been said...most of it is a rehash of other books...am certainly not planning on putting any "money in the plate" here!

Just wondering since he has had connection with NYT and Newsweek if it will have any impact on MSM? If his intended audience is really NY state (hey we're being used) with the rest of us just collateral?
