Former Mifflin Principal Claims Discrimination
NBC 4 Columbus ^ | June 22, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A former high school principal who was charged with failure to report after an alleged sexual assault at Mifflin High School says she is being discriminated against, NBC 4's Elizabeth Scarborough reported.

Regina Crenshaw's lawyer on Wednesday entered a pretrial motion to dismiss the charges. Her attorney said Crenshaw has been singled out and prosecuted because she is a black female while other administrators in similar situations were not.

Prosecutors said two students sexually assaulted a developmentally disabled girl in the school's auditorium March 9 while other students watched. Crenshaw was the school's principal when the alleged incident took place.

Brandyn Hobbs, 15, and Timothy C. Armistead, 16, were each charged with two counts of rape, one count of sexual battery and one count of kidnapping for the alleged incident. Crenshaw was charged with failure to report child abuse. The girl's father called police, NBC 4 reported.

During her pretrial hearing on Wednesday, Crenshaw and her attorney said the criminal charges against her should be dropped because she's being treated unfairly.

"There are other principals, other school administrators who could have been prosecuted, but they weren't," said Crenshaw's attorney, Toki Clark. "We think that because of her race and her gender, she was prosecuted."

Clark said her client was not the first administrator who did not call police in this type of situation. Clark said that is an unspoken rule in the district, Scarborough reported.

"In this motion, what you'll also find are a number of scenarios where sexual abuse took place in Columbus Public Schools and members of the Board of Education and perhaps even (Superintendent) Gene Harris were aware of it and was brought to their attention. Yet 911 wasn't called and Children Services was not called."

In the motion to dismiss, there are six other affidavits signed by parents of victims of alleged abuse that was not reported to authorities. Clark said she and Crenshaw are not trying to get anyone else in trouble.

"The fact that other people weren't prosecuted shows that Mrs. Crenshaw equally should not have been prosecuted," Clark said.

Crenshaw made a brief statement.

"Whatever teachable moments there are, I want all of those teachable moments to be revealed," Crenshaw said.

A hearing to discuss the motion will be held in 30 days.

Crenshaw also faces a hearing in front of the school board and a civil case. Both are still being scheduled.

Is this the principal that told the parents of the mentally handicapped girl that was raped to not call the police about it because it would cause bad PR for the school?

I got caught doing something wrong and rather than fess up to it, I will play the race card, which is all I can do.

Exactly, and that kind of attitude does only harm to whichever demographic with which she identifies.

Oops, I mangled my thought in mid-cut and paste. Her attitude does harm to any demographic with which she identifies. In other words, playing the "I'm a black woman, you can't punish me" victimhood card isn't good for women or blacks.

Yes, she was the principal. She didn't want a 911 call to go out over the police radio because the media would pick up on it.

I think it is good the media did get involved. With people like her running the schools, it is amazing the students learn anything at all. What a sorry example she became to the little children in her charge, "because I am black and female?" I say, give me a break !!!! It is because you are totally incompetent and somewhat stupid-that is why you were charged and that is why you should be fired and put in jail !!

She didn't report it, so she should be charged. Simple as that.

"The fact that other people weren't prosecuted shows that Mrs. Crenshaw equally should not have been prosecuted," Clark said.

Then those others need to prosecuted as well. How could you think you shouldn't report rape. What kind of animal is she?

"Whatever teachable moments there are, I want all of those teachable moments to be revealed," Crenshaw said.

WTF does that mean? That we (evil whitey) are to "learn" that she is in fact a victim? Only on Bizzaro world Regina. After this crime I would not hire her to dish out meat loaf in the cafeteria, let alone be a principle
