In 1811 the area was sparsely populated. Today St. Louis and Memphis would receive damage from a big scale quake and St. Louis has no building codes concerning earthquakes.

New Madrid's "Big One" was expected to occur back in '90. I say "expected" because only one source, Browning, had predicted it. Very few, if any, real seismologists bought it, but the public did. Incidentally, some Jehovah's Witnesses, with their penchant for predicting the end of the world down to the minute, also fell for the rejected prophecy. Anybody remember that?Yep. They actually shut down schools that day, because too many people said they were going to keep their kids home. (My kids were planning on going that day.) I seem to recall that after the quake failed to materialize, Browning tried to change the date for his prediction, but this time fewer people paid an attention to him...

Point well made; It surprises me that St.Louis is geologically/historically obtuse. The fault isn't confined to New Madrid. Are we talking new construction too? Or just the existing stuff?
Just an aside; earthquake damage to structures varies. If you build on rock, you'll shake and lose all kinds of stuff that falls and breaks but the structure should survive. If you build on soil (floodplains, deep soil areas), the structure will be racked if not split up or collapsed. Seismic waves through deep soil areas are very destructive.

Oh oh. You too? ;) Grew up in Illinois...transferred to SF for the '89 quake...transferred to Seattle for the 2001 quake.
I'm a quakin' kid....
...however...now that I'm out west...I like to tease my mom (still in Illinois) that the biggest big one (in the lower 48) happened in her neck of the woods.... ;)

One of the few great government things about the Peoples' Republic of Seattle is the library system. I use it as my private amazon.
I already put a hold on "8.4" and it should be ready in a couple of days. Thanks for the heads-up!!!
BTW...I only buy selectively at amazon...but I use them as a vast resource for all kinds of research on books, cooking stuff (I'm a newbie...at my age!!), etc.
