Over the last two decades, Chicago, Illinois has earned the reputation of having one of the highest rates of police coerced false confessions in the United States. Many documented cases involved the use of unusually brutal tactics, including electric shock, beatings and using a plastic bag to restrict oxygen. The problem got so out of hand that the Chicago Police Department was forced to conduct an internal investigation to weed out corrupt officers who were known to conduct cruel interrogations.

You don't even need to confess, LPC....we KNOW you're guilty. ; 0 Being the product of a good Catholic upbringing, I feel guilty even on those rare occasions when I'm not.

seems Dickie Durbin should be more concerned about his own backyard than Gitmo interrogations Seriously !
The islamotrash in Gitmo have it better than the boys doing time in the super max joint at Marion IL.

He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue.
That's the Chicago way!

A Chairwoman of a board in the Chicago area said (in her horrid, eastern, nasal tone) a few years ago that a rat there was "reading too many comic books." Police were illegally having people's cars towed in a scam where those people had to pay about $3000 dollars to get their cars out of the pound. She was certain that she would never be caught. She and her friends were involved in crime throughout several states.
But she and many of her friends in several states went down. And although the process took a few years, it was their meanness and vanity that made it easy. Officious criminals in various organizations for the interests of municipalities are a good source of leads.

I don't know about "false" but the CPD has never been that concerned with niceties particularly when cop killers were invovled.

This has been a one-party dictatorship since the days of Big Bill Thompson. It has exhibited the thuggishness pervalent in them. Ham-handed, meat-headed crooks thrive here. Some of the stupidest people on earth have served as aldermen in the Chicago City Council.
But the Republican opposition is hapless an incapable of bringing this machine down. Now the State dances to its tune.

All said and done, Chicago is a great place to live. It appears clean to me. People who come to visit always remark on how clean the place looks. And the crime is down. Now there are probably some city folks that do things the old fashioned way. But I have never seen a more livable city.

I am unfortunately from Illinois. It is well known that Chicago homicide detectives have used phone books to bash suspects over the head until they confess. Often times the phone book is soaked in water to make it heavier. Nice gestapo style tactics. "We don't know if you are the n----a that did it, be we know you dun' something".

Having lived in the Windy City for a decade, (Near west side) I find your opinion laughable. Yes, there are nice museum's and zoo's. But the corruption, litter and graffiti are rampant.
"But I have never seen a more livable city...." You must get out more.

The point is that the police are not the ones who find the 'perps' guilty - the jury or judge does that.True. But what the jury sees and hears is the confession, probably along with a legibly signed waiver of the bad guy's rights. Kinda hard to overcome that . . . even if you are innocent.

The Chicago police threatened to shoot their family dog unless they let the police in to search for and confiscate their firearms
by Michael D. Robbins, FraudFactor.com, June 18, 2005
A number of years ago, I was contacted by a mixed-race couple living in Chicago who were desperately seeking help, including an attorney referral, to defend against charges of violating Chicago's gun control law.
The husband was black and his wife was white. He worked the night shift as a computer operator. A street gang was harassing and threatening his wife while he was away at work. Both the black man and his white wife were ordinary nonviolent citizens with no criminal record or history.
The gang members used the Chicago police to disarm their intended victims
The gang members used the Chicago police to disarm their intended victims by falsely reporting that the man threatened them with a handgun. The gang members did not know if the man or his wife owned any firearms, but the police would find out for them and disarm their intended victims if they were armed.
The Chicago police were more interested in disarming this black working man than in protecting him and his wife from the gang members.
The police showed up at his door without a search warrant and threatened to shoot the family dog if he did not let them in to search for and confiscate all of their firearms. They did not have children and their dog was like a child to them.
To save the life of their dog, they let the Chicago police officers in to their residence. The police then said they must show them where all of their firearms are hidden, or they will shoot the family dog. They led the police to where they kept their two self-defense handguns. One belonged to him and the other to his wife.
The Chicago police charged the black man for his white wife's handgun
The police arrested the black husband, and charged him with two violations - one for possession of his own handgun and the second charge for possession of the handgun that actually belonged to his white wife. Both handguns were purchased legally outside Chicago city limits.
The wife was put in greater danger from the gang members after being disarmed by the police on behalf of the gang members, and while her husband was under arrest in police custody.
The police had no interest in the criminal activities of the gang members. They were only interested in an otherwise law-abiding black man who owned a self-defense handgun when the police would not protect his family, and who violated Chicago's dangerous gun control law which was selectively enforced against minorities by Chicago's Democrat political machine.
When I get some time, I will find my file on the plight of this couple and post an article on the subject at FraudFactor.com.
Why many politicians support gun control
On a related subject, I was told explicitly the reason why many politicians who support restrictive gun control laws do so. I was explaining to a politician in California in a face-to-face discussion that firearm laws should should target only criminals and should not target, punish, and harass law-abiding citizens. He responded, "Some people should not have guns. You cannot trust the ni--ers with guns!" I was highly offended, as were the others with me who witnessed this conversation.
Another reason that soft-on-crime Democrat politicians support gun control is they are using it to try to steal the crime issue from the Republicans, and to falsely claim to voters they being tough-on-crime.
I have more information on this here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1414920/posts?page=50#50
One of the reasons there is so much violent crime in black communities, typically in cities controlled and mismanaged by Democrat political machines, is because the more restrictive gun control laws in these cities increase violent crime by shifting the balance of power to favor criminals over ordinary citizens, and by destroying the deterrent and crime control effects of armed citizens.
