LARGO, Fla. -- An autopsy on Terri Schiavo backed her husband's contention that she was in a persistent vegetative state, finding that she had massive and irreversible brain damage and was blind, the medical examiner's office said Wednesday. It also found no evidence that she was strangled or otherwise abused.
But what caused her collapse 15 years remained a mystery. The autopsy and post-mortem investigation found no proof that she had an eating disorder, as was suspected at the time, Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner Jon Thogmartin said.
Autopsy results on the 41-year-old brain-damaged woman were made public Wednesday, more than two months after Schiavo's death March 31 ended an internationally watched right-to-die battle between her husband and parents that engulfed the courts, Congress and the White House and divided the country.
Thogmartin also said she did not appear to have suffered a heart attack and there was no evidence that she was given harmful drugs or other substances prior to her death.
She died from dehydration, Thogmartin said.
He said she would not have been able to eat or drink if she had been given food by mouth as her parents' requested.
"Removal of her feeding tube would have resulted in her death whether she was fed or hydrated by mouth or not," Thogmartin told reporters.
He also said she was blind, because the "vision centers of her brain were dead."

One thing's for sure-the Terry tinfoil crowd is out in force today and the parents aren't the only ones who are in denial.

Furhman on with Sean, saying he agrees with the coroner's report fully and that it is extensive and that he believes teh coroner will be hailed for his work.
Yes, but he says the autopsy says it's unanswered why she collapsed, and he says there can be strangulation without evidence of strangulation.
So, why did they administer pain killers?
"I lost all respect for Hannity during the weeks of the removal Terri's feeding tube.
Hannity bought, hook, line & sinker total accusations and vicious lies about MS.
Sean didn't bother to look at any of the medical facts or court documents.
I still have little respect for Sean. He didn't want to know actual facts of the case. Or he would have done some homework/research as many of us did, before deciding for ourselves."
I couldn't agree more. I too lost all respect for Sean during that time.
I wonder, though, was he really roped in by all this foolishness or is he PANDERING to his listening audience?
I thought he was an intelligent reasonable guy, I guess I was wrong. (And before the comments like "Oh, he is not intelligent because he doesn't advocate MURDER, huh?" come out.. it wasn't his position itself, but the BLATANT intellectual dishonesty and vapid statements that spewd from his mouth during that time)
Gee, didn't the coronoer say that, too?
and he says there can be strangulation without evidence of strangulation.
After Sean baited him, of course he did.
Are you suggesting he's saying anything other than speculation? Ridiculous. He talked about a LOT of things that could have happened, but, then, so did the coroner.
And certainly they can't suffer from the other, deeper effects of dehydration I'm sure. < /sarcasm >
No, but some people seem to still be looking for some grand conspiracy where there was none...much like the Left does.
Thank you!
I believe Furhman.
BUT! Did he convince Hannity?
I'd like to see how Sean explains himself on H&C tonight.
I think he just knows right from wrong. Nothing more needs to be said.
If he was pandering to his audience, he lost a lot of respect from many of us.
Mainly, b/c he DID NOT/WOULD NOT research the facts of the case.
Court documents, hospital records, etc.
He echoed what the schindlers were spewing.
If you have to ask, I can't explain it. You are the victum here.
I'll take that to mean that you have no evidence that this ME is anything but independent.
If today's autopsy report can't prove him wrong.... he's a bafoon.
SOP in a hospice. Everyone gets painkillers.
