Republicans with a shot in 2008

Posted on 06/08/2005 5:00:47 PM PDT by Remember_Salamis

Im tired of this MSM talk of McCain, Frist, Guiliani, Romney, and Pataki for the 2008 nomination. Out of those, onyl Frist has a chance at winning the primaries. So let's take a look at some real candidates.

Republicans with a shot in 2008:

Sen. Allen - the front-runner Sen. Brownback - Probably running for VP Sen. Thune - His name has been thrown around as a serious "sleeper" candidate in 2008 Gov. Pawlenty - Popular Conservative Gov. could give the GOP the great lakes states Gov. Sanford Gov. Bush (won't run) Gov. Owens (if marraige is fixed) Newt Gingrich

Romney, Allen, or Owens.

Congressman Mike Rogers (of Michigan, not the other one!). Pro-life, pro-family, pro-military, clean living guy, no skeletons. And for the riff-raff, his name is easy to remember and he's easy on the eyes. I'd campaign like hell for the guy.

Allen

The reason may be flimsy .. but he said, "this is no time to cower in the corner". If he means that .. he could get my vote.

If Sen. Rick Santorum is re-elected in Blue State PA in 2006, you got to add him in the mix.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Colin Powell.

"There is a standing curse on senators. [Hopefully the hex will kill hillary]."

There's no curse on senators. Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Bush1 were all Senators. The rest is pure coincidence.

Absolutely. If he can win re-election in 2006 I'll be all for him in the primaries.

I agree with the Tancredo part. I'd look for Tancredo/Rice combo as a strong ticket, but it's very early to hitch to any particular wagon. I think Newt Gingrich has lots of ideas and seems a very intelligent person.

Rick Santorum is about to get his head handed to him in his 2006 Senate race. He will be politically unemployed in 2008.

Forget any senator. There is a reason why they can't get elected President. Most voters realize they are a bunch of losers.

Typically Senators are bad candidates for POTUS.

Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Bush1 were all Senators.

Kennedy is the only one of this group who was elected President from the Senate. All the rest were VP's first -- big difference.

At this point, it's hard not to pick George Allen as the most likely to be nominated. Most of those other candidates don't have a chance in hell of being the GOP nominee.

There are some exceptions, but they are a minority for sure. More appropriately, a politician is what you become when you have failed at working for a living.
