Republicans with a shot in 2008

Posted on 06/08/2005 5:00:47 PM PDT by Remember_Salamis

Im tired of this MSM talk of McCain, Frist, Guiliani, Romney, and Pataki for the 2008 nomination. Out of those, onyl Frist has a chance at winning the primaries. So let's take a look at some real candidates.

Republicans with a shot in 2008:

Sen. Allen - the front-runner Sen. Brownback - Probably running for VP Sen. Thune - His name has been thrown around as a serious "sleeper" candidate in 2008 Gov. Pawlenty - Popular Conservative Gov. could give the GOP the great lakes states Gov. Sanford Gov. Bush (won't run) Gov. Owens (if marraige is fixed) Newt Gingrich

Interesting way to phrase it and I think correct maybe.

That's how I typed it, but it didn't come out that way.

Yeah, your post will stay in the form you put it, until the FR software senses the slightest bit of HTML. When that happens, all manual line spacing and pagination is ignored.

It's working as designed.

ll I'm saying is that it would be silly to judge the presidential candidates based on who's a governor/who's a senator. EVERYBODY on this board seems to disagree with me. I'm worried that we may nominate an inferior candidate solely because some think a Senator can't win a Presidential election, which as I've been saying, is blatantly false."

Not quite EVERYBODY. I agree with you in a way. I think that the most important attribute to a Presidential candidate getting elected is personal appeal. I just happen to think that on average, Senators don't have that appeal going for them. It may not be fair, but it seems to be the way it is. Hopefully, one of the GOPers will buck that trend. I certainly don't want to see the HildaBeast do it.

I favor Senator Allen who is as folksy as GWB. Brownback doesn't inspire and although Gingrich is very smart and always thinking, the fact that the Clintons like him tells me to beware.

I love Tancredo too, but he doesn't have the "institutional" backing to get the nomination. Reagan, probably the only "grassroots" candidate to ever win the nomination, had to run three times before he got the nomination.

Pawlenty will pick one of the lovely young senators to dance on the ticket.

Pawlenty can win the Great Lake States, assuring GOP victory.

It's my deal-breaker. I went door-to-door in downtown Lansing, a bastion of liberalism, stumping for President Bush. I can't really see myself doing that for a pro-abortion GOPer. I'd campaign extra hard against the opposition, and when it comes down to the vote, I would end up casting a ballot for the lesser of two evils. I wouldn't expend my energy on a pro-abortion candidate, however. Just wouldn't, couldn't do it.

... or Rudy Guiliani. Not my first choice (pun intended) but still a serious possibility.

Rudy is no republicans first choice(except converts from the DNC) but that is exactly what i'm saying.. He is a serious contender for 08. If by chance he does get the nomination, i dont think conservative voters should boycott him and give the democrats a chance to take the white house by splitting our vote thru a 3rd party candidate or not voting at all.

I like what I've heard about Allen. Sounds like the best of the bunch.

However, most people don't know much about him. What are his strengths, vulnerabilities?

Hmmmmm. I don't know much about this guy but his bio sounds pretty good:

Tim Pawlenty was elected Governor of Minnesota in 2002, with the state facing an historic $4.5 billion budget deficit. Just months later, the Legislature adopted Pawlenty's plan to eliminate the deficit without raising taxes or cutting funding for K-12 classrooms. In addition to balancing the budget, Governor Pawlenty fought for and passed a dramatic overhaul of the state's education standards, significant welfare reform, lawsuit reform, a range of new government efficiency initiatives, and passed the largest transportation package in modern history. Pawlenty has also outlined an aggressive agenda, including a nation-leading effort to make affordable prescription medicine available to citizens. His prior public service career includes being a prosecutor and Eagan City Council member. Pawlenty served 10 years in the Minnesota House of Representatives, including four as House Majority Leader.

I thought I heard that Mark Sanford has taken himself out of the running for the '08 nomination. If so, its a pity. I've been watching his career for several years now and I am very impressed.

Gotta agree that a combination of Allen, Pawlenty and Rice look pretty strong for us in '08, although I don't know too much about either of them yet (same for most of America, I'd bet). However, who in 1996/7 picked GWB to be the next Pres?

As many here always say, look to the governors. Allen & Pawlenty pass those tests.

At the same time, would love to see Dr. Rice be the governor of Cali., do a great job, and then one day (2012/2016) parlay her success there as a jumping board for Pres. Dem's can't win w/o California....would almost ensure a Rep. victory if we got California. Would be a nail in their coffin. Such a route would enable her to become more "seasoned" in domestic politics.

Speaking of 2008, assuming Shrillary is the Dem nominee, who does she pick for Veep? If I were her advisor, I'd say Obama to get the black vote, Richardson the Latino vote or Evan Bayh to try and pick up a red state.
Best,
JMB

PS 1st time poster---love the board!!!

From what I hear, Evan Bayh may be working to take Hillary on in the primaries. We'll see, though. Hillary has a BIG advantage in money and organization.
