Republicans with a shot in 2008

Posted on 06/08/2005 5:00:47 PM PDT by Remember_Salamis

Im tired of this MSM talk of McCain, Frist, Guiliani, Romney, and Pataki for the 2008 nomination. Out of those, onyl Frist has a chance at winning the primaries. So let's take a look at some real candidates.

Republicans with a shot in 2008:

Sen. Allen - the front-runner Sen. Brownback - Probably running for VP Sen. Thune - His name has been thrown around as a serious "sleeper" candidate in 2008 Gov. Pawlenty - Popular Conservative Gov. could give the GOP the great lakes states Gov. Sanford Gov. Bush (won't run) Gov. Owens (if marraige is fixed) Newt Gingrich

Regardless of party, I would vote for a candidate who is currently doing something to balance the budget and controlling the borders, and that would be ...

Thanks for the offer. I may be plenty motivated and won't need the assist.

What is your opinion of Allen? Who would you support?

I like Allen. As I said, he's been great during the Bolton hearings (He knocked the every living CRAP out of Joe Biden!) and the filibuster debates.

Stand up guy.

Tom Tancredo. He's the REAL option for the GOP. So many Republicans are fed up with the lack of security on the borders that he would definitely do very well. I can just see him now debating Hillary:

Tancredo: "Hey, if you're such a hawk now you must be in favor of securing the borders with our military!"

Clinton: "Yes, I am! I mean, no, well, um, yes, we should secure our country but use the natural means of protecting our borders!"

Tancredo: "Really? And what is that?"

Clinton: (with all her natural conviction)
"DESERTS AND SNOW!"

He's no RhINO, that's for sure. It's time to shift just a bit further to the right. Screw McCain, Allen, and Frist. I think Tom Tancredo would be the leader that we'd need after 8 years of Borderless Bush.

Romney, Allen, or Owens.

I like any two of these three. Although Rice or Guiliani would also work for me.

Has to be a Southerner, and in that vein, I recommend Mike Huckabee.

So what?

When you add all the Senators to the mix who were unsuccessful in securing their party's nomination before they could even get to a general election, you end up with a list of characters that makes a brain-dead old man look like a great choice. Joe Lieberman? John Edwards? Tom Daschle? You've got to be kidding me -- these were viable candidates for the White House?!?!

Welcome to FR. Most were not that familiar with the record of George W. Bush (outside of recognizing his last name) 3 years before his run in 2000. And, I can assure that no one knew anything about Bill Clinton outside of AR when he ran for first term.

Pick a Governor.

Senators don't get elected President of the United States (unless they serve their time as VP.) The last time a Republican Senator ran for the Presidency and won was 1920 - Warren G. Harding.

George Allen (politician)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

(Redirected from George Allen, Jr.)
George F. Allen
George F. Allen

George Felix Allen (born March 8, 1952 in Whittier, California) is a U.S. Senator from Virginia and a member of the Republican Party. His late father George was a legendary NFL coach who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Allen was elected to the Senate in 2000, defeating the Democratic incumbent, Charles Robb. He is a member of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee. Allen was appointed in the last Congress to serve as the chairman of the High Tech Task Force. Allen was unanimously elected a member of the Senate Republican leadership as Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in 2002, and oversaw a net gain of four seats for the Republicans in the 2004 Senate elections. His successor as NRSC chair is Elizabeth Dole.

Prior to his election to the Senate, Allen served as the 67th Governor of Virginia from 1994 to 1998. From 1991 to 1993, he served in the United States House of Representatives. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1983 to 1991.

Allen holds a B.A. in History as well as a law degree from the University of Virginia. He and his wife, Susan, reside in Mount Vernon, Virginia with their three children: Tyler, Forrest, and Brooke.

As of May 2nd, 2005, a survery of 75 Washington insiders conducted by National Journal's The Hotline reveals that he is considered to be the current front-runner for the GOP party nomination for the 2008 Presidential election.

Allen is extremely fond of using football metaphors, a tendency which has been remarked upon by journalists and commentators [1] (http://markschmitt.typepad.com/decembrist/2005/05/a_tough_questio.html) [2] (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A1422-2005Feb5.html).

Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Bush1 were all Senators.

You might want to check that list.

Note I wrote the following paragraph in the first post on this thread:

"George Allen a Senator who was a governor is an interesting case. Do we elect ex-governors for their administrative experience or do we not elect Senators because they have such a long record of votes and so many compromises that their opponents can use against them. "

Which do you think it is? Will the executive experience trump the Senate voting record? Or are Senator just made weak by an institution that value conciliation over decision making?
