WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon on Friday confirmed for the first time that a U.S. soldier deliberately kicked a Guantanamo Bay prisoner's Muslim holy book in violation of the military's rules for handling the Quran.
In other confirmed incidents, prison guards threw water balloons in a cell block, causing an unspecified number of Qurans to get wet; a guard's urine splashed on a detainee and his Quran; an interrogator stepped on a Quran during an interrogation; and a two-word obscenity was written in English on the inside cover of a Quran.
The findings are among the results of an investigation last month by Brig. Gen. Jay Hood, the commander of the detention center in Cuba, that was triggered by a Newsweek magazine report - later retracted - that a U.S. soldier had flushed one Guantanamo Bay detainee's Quran down a toilet.
The story stirred worldwide controversy and the Bush administration blamed it for deadly demonstrations in Afghanistan.
Last week, Hood disclosed that he had confirmed five cases of mishandling of the Quran, but he refused to provide details. Allegations of Quran desecration at Guantanamo Bay have led to anti-American passions in many Muslim nations, although Pentagon officials have insisted that the problems were relatively minor and that U.S. commanders have gone to great lengths to enable detainees to practice their religion in captivity.
Hood said last week that he found no credible evidence that a Quran was ever flushed down a toilet. He said a prisoner who was reported to have complained to an FBI agent in 2002 that a military guard threw a Quran in the toilet has since told Hood's investigators that he never witnessed any form of Quran desecration.

Well, Im really sick of these stories....I just might order a free Koran from CAIR....Im running low on toilet tissue...LOL
Bill O'Reilly had the same theory last night on his show---
That the MSM and the dems are "conspiring" to use the AG and the Gitmo "torture" stories to impeach President Bush--
His guest was Laura Ingraham, and she said the same thing that you did---that red-state America is too busy living their lives and really don't care about AG and Gitmo, because we (red staters) KNOW that these are NOT the military's ways...just a few idiots with uniforms on...
Another Savage infidel.
I say videotape swine trampling and deficating on the Koran in pools of their own swill with a segment of a nuclear blast at the end - - send millions of copies to the Middle East by dropping them out of C-130s over every city from Tripoli to Indonesia...
A little Japanese style militarism in Japan would be nice too... no more worries about North Korea or China for the United States...
Savage Infidel? Please explain.
The best way to protect our Americans abroad, is to make these Islamo-Fascists sh*t-birds KNOW that each and every time that they look cross-eyed at an American, their butt is grass and we are the lawnmower.
These maggots don't understand anything less.
Well, by publishing this report in this manner the Pentagon has opened the gates of hell. Maybe they believe openess is the best policy but... Well, it's hard to say. Are we in a WW2 style global conflict here?
The Newsweek report impact will be nothing compared to the reaction to this. Especially the vagueness about the urine... Is this going to be clarified?
What a mess.
I agree, but pissing on a Koran doesn't do crap. If we bombed Syria and Tehran and North Korea, that would send the message though...
This report shows weakness. If we were truly tough, we wouldn't pretend to give a crap.
"The Pentagon on Friday confirmed for the first time that a U.S. soldier deliberately kicked a Guantanamo Bay prisoner's Muslim holy book "
Hey but he did not put under wear on it or through it in a pile of naked prisoners building a human pyramid.
So he should be okay right?
If I was in charge each of these cavemen would have a koran shoved up his ass right before I hanged the SOB. Then I would have a detail p*ss on their dead carcass.
"Soldier kicked Koran".............Oh, the horror of it all!
Will someone please explain to me how it is that liberals defend terrorist's rights to practice their religion but they deny Christian U. S. citizens the same right???
"You're so right and we should feed them pork."
LOL! Great idea!! Pork and beans!!!
"Who gives a Shiite?...listen closely as I drop kick one of my five versions of the Qur'an across the floor for my cats to chase...Cornpone"
In a way you're right. In my view there's nothing morally wrong with throwing a book around. The problem with this is that it's a POLITICAL problem. For Muslims, it's worse to kick a Quran than to physically torture someone (probably even murder); and for that reason, the military should avoid doing it AND THE PRESS SHOULD NOT REPORT IT.
"You're so right and we should feed them pork. Some good eastern NC BBQ with a vinegar based sauce(the best). Oh, and serve it to them on pages of the Koran."
That's actually a good idea for an interrogation method, I think. Lock them up in a room for days with the option of eating only pork. I'd like to see the MSM spin that one: "US military offends Islamic sensibilities."
Let's start by making each and every member of the ACLU and the MSM wear a readily identifable marking on their chest......
I'll bet a dollar to a donut-hole that this Bravo Sierra would come to a screaching halt in about 10 minutes.....
" What's with AP's obsession with this minutia?"
As I just said to someone else: What makes mishandling the Koran a big deal is the repercussions from adherents to that religion that considers it a bigger crime to insult its prophet and his book than to kill civilians.
I think we should look at this from a political point of view: Muslims would be less angered by torture than by kicking the Koran. Therefore it's obvious that the AP wants to see some dead Americans.
Unfortunately, it's going to be the foreign media that will drive this story. It's hard to know what is more damaging: that they will report we did it or that we are saying that we are sorry.
