Thursday, June 2, 2005 1:37 p.m. EDT Nixon Horrified Jew Could Head FBI

Two months after the Watergate break-in, President Nixon already knew that FBI official W. Mark Felt was leaking information to reporters – because Nixon had his own spy at the FBI, an Oval Office tape reveals.

The tape also discloses that Nixon was shocked to learn Felt was Jewish and became horrified that a Jew could become head of the FBI.(Vanity Fair described Felt, whose ancestors were Irish, as claiming "no religious affiliation.")

In the conversation between Nixon and Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, taped on Oct. 19, 1972, Haldeman mentions Felt by name and refers to Nixon’s spy as "our source.”

And when Haldeman discusses Felt’s ambition to head the FBI, Nixon says: "Christ, put a Jew in there?”

It’s not the only time Nixon was taped making an anti-Semitic remark.

On the tape of a February 1972 conversation with evangelist Billy Graham – made public in February 2002 – Nixon complained that a number of major news publications were "dominated” by Jews, and Graham responded: "The stranglehold has got to be broken, or the country’s going to go down the drain.”

Nixon said: "You believe that?”

Graham: "Yes sir.”

Nixon: "So do I. I can’t ever say that, but I believe it.”

Graham: "No, but if you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something.”

Later on the tape, after Graham left, Nixon told Haldeman: "The Jews are irreligious, atheistic, immoral bunch of bastards.”

The tape citing Felt as a leak mentions FBI Director L. Patrick Gray, whom Nixon had appointed after J. Edgar Hoover died – passing over Felt, who was expected to get the top job.

Here are excerpts from the tape:

Nixon: "Well, if they’ve got a leak down at the FBI, why the hell can’t Gray tell us what the hell is left . . . ?”

Haldeman: "We know what’s left, and we know who leaked it.”

Nixon: "Somebody in the FBI?”

Haldeman: "Yes, sir. Mark Felt. You can’t say anything about this because it will screw up our source and there’s a real concern. [Attorney General John] Mitchell is the only one who knows about this and he feels strongly that we better not do anything because . . .”

Nixon: "Do anything? Never.”

Haldeman: "If we move on him, he’ll go out and unload everything. He knows everything that’s to be known in the FBI. He has access to absolutely everything . . .”

Nixon: "You know what I’d do with him, the bastard? Well that’s all I want to hear about it.”

Haldeman: "I think he wants to be in the top spot.”

Nixon: "That’s a hell of a way for him to get to the top ... Is he Catholic?”

Haldeman: "Jewish.”

Nixon: "Christ, put a Jew in there?”

Haldeman: "Well, that could explain it, too.”

"I think the Great Betrayal was more on Ford's watch than Nixon's."

Come to remember, that's a good point. Did Nixon's Administration have anything to do with starting the withdrawal? ...can't remember for sure, but his efforts to please the opposition were apparent toward the end of his time in office. I had assumed that it was because some of the protesters (SDS, et al) were going into their parents' corporations to run them and influence government more.

I have to wonder--who is Hillary Clinton's Felt? Who has been feeding her what they know, and who has "access to everything"???

Speaking of Nixon and Israel, a friend of mine flew the first 141 into Lod airport on the resupply mission that Nixon launched with teh simple words "If it flies, it goes."

It is long past time to stop bad mouthing Nixon for Watergate. The Watergate-ers were looking for what they thought were documents linking the Democrats with Soviets.

Only after the USSR broke up did we find out how many spies and collaborators there were in America. Too late for Nixon, though.

Good information Phil. I was not interested in politics at that time so a lot of the details are new to me.

Nixon's remark was not an idle one. In Felt's book, The FBI Pyramid, on page 98, he remarks, in speaking of what Felt calls the 'Catholic left' that "if any religion dominates in the FBI it is the Catholic faith." Nixon wasn't the only one who made such distinctions.

As I always undestood it, Nixon wanted to "end the war with honor" including a full accounting of MIA/POWs. At least that's the "spin" I've heard. As far as winning, I think that was hopelessly shattered because the nation had lost all confidence in our ability to win thanks to the likes of Kerry, Fonda et. al.

The North Vietnamese were pretty much defeated after the Tet Offensive but were emboldened by many of our useful idiots back home. Thank you Walter Cronkite.

Once the war began, the Soviet Union, an ardent supporter of the Arab cause, quickly resupplied its client armies. Despite opposition within his Cabinet, President Nixon ordered a huge resupply airlift to Israel, which was running short of critical war materiel.

Nixon: "Christ, put a Jew in there?”

I might be wrong, but just now, on the Larry King rerun, the transcript seemed to say...

Christ, Hoover put a Jew in there?

The question becomes... Was Nixon surprised at Felt's position within the FBI because Nixon thought Hoover was an anti-Semite?

Who knows. But one can't help but wonder if it could be for the same reasons Nixon didn't. The man had access to a lot of info/files. Or as Nixon said, "everything". I don't quite know what the scope of that statement meant. One can only wonder.

It means Dick knew that Felt had photos of him behind the grassy knoll.

You are certainly right is saying Nixon helped Israel;

To Israel's shock, Sadat and his Syrian partners sent 70,000 Egyptian troops against the 500 (yes, only 500) Israelis at the Canal. In the north, the Syrians hurled 1,800 tanks at Israel's 180 tanks positioned on the Golan Heights.

President Nixon ordered a huge resupply airlift to Israel, which was running short of critical war materiel.

The tide of battle turned in Israel's favor.

You make an excellent point. On page 188 of Felt's The FBI Pyramid, he may have been making just such a veiled threat to any who would mess-with-Mark, when he quotes Miss Gandy as having said, at the time of Hoover's death, that "all Bureau files should be sent to Mr. Felt." Even so, I think much too little is being said about the culpability of Woodward, who has legal training, but claims, absurdly, that Felt didn't do anything that was illegal. I have not yet heard anyone ask Woodward if he could be charged with obstructing justice for protecting Felt's identity. Assuming others did not know, for certain, that Felt was Deep Throat, only Woodward could have known that Deep Throat was indeed guilty of numerous federal offences. I noticed on 'Larry King Live' last night that Woodward pressed the point that Felt had not revealed information from Grand Jury testimony, but he may be on 'thin ice' about this if some vigorous young federal prosecutors, with a Woodward-like zeal to make a name for themselves, took a close look at all that Woodward sourced to Deep Throat. Maybe in Woodward's visit to the White House, 'W' let him know that there are federal prosecutors who want to pursue him.

I'm sure you understand that the Journal's Best of the Web Today was not endorsing the Iranian television slant on Watergate. Notice the quotation marks around "news story," indicating that is was just anti-Israel propaganda. Iran's mullahs were trying to twist Watergate into an anti-Jewish rant and blame Nixon's misdeeds on a Jewish conspiracy. Nonsense. Iranian TV has the credibility of Al Jazeera.

"Zionists" weren't out to get Nixon. Nixon was paranoid, didn't trust anyone, had few friends, and saw enemies everywhere he looked, including Jews and anyone who disagreed with him. A sad and pitiful man.

It is because of Carter that we have the Atomic Iran described by Jerome Corsi which chants, "Death to Israel, Death to America."

Christine Todd Witless is maximally emetic.

I think it may go further than her just suggesting that. He may have been in possession of many files before and after Hoovers death. I think it's known that Gandy gave him boxes of files within just days of Hoover's death, and some files have come up missing, I believe. In any event, it's my feeling that there may be a few in D.C. that have been in that town a long time, that are quietly watching this event unfold, and maybe hoping it just goes away, with out any further surprises.

Times have changed a lot. Nixon was very much of that older generation that didn't grow up with post-war taboos on ethnic stereotypes.

According to Vanity Fair, though, Felt wasn't Jewish, but of Irish ancestry and no religion. That's more likely, but there still may be at least one more mystery surrounding DT.

It would be funny if Nixon didn't make Felt head of the FBI because Haldeman thought he was Jewish, and he wasn't Jewish.

Felt was Catholic and Nixon thought he was Jewish because of his name no doubt, and Haldeman "confirmed" it, because well, he thought the name was Jewish too no doubt. Sad to think these guys were both sitting in the oval office.

It is not just the taboo. The sterotypes are less and less accurate, and less and less about matters that folks care about anymore, to the extent it still has any accuracy at all.
