On the Sean Hannity Program today there was serious discussion that former Congressman John Kasich could challenge Senator Mike DeWine in next year's Republican primary in Ohio. Besides being a former congressman Kasich is known as a fill-in host of Fox News Channel.
Your memory IS correct and Kasich was one of the major players that engineered not only the balanced budgets of the 90's but the economic success we experienced during that timeperiod.
What always amazes me is a Pubbie like Kasich doing good by the country, even though a Dem was President......Klintoon, The Scumbag, taking credit and claiming he was responsible for all of it.........
.......Now we have Dems doing everything they can to sabotage the economy, screwing the American people, and blaming Bush for the ills.
I would be willing to temporarily relocate from S.Texas to help.
Yes Ken you are wrong it is not known to the nation some of the proposals Dewine has supported here in Ohio.
Darby creek initative for one which would have made it so the farmers in that area could have farmed the land but not done any improvements to the buildings on said land.
That and his poor voting record on gun rights is more than enough for me but to be so gullible to be lead down a garden path.that is not the kind of leadership needed by anyone.
I heard him say on his weekend show recently that he hopes a deal is made in the Senate, otherwise nothing will get done. So I don't know....
Have you heard anything about this?
Also, is there any truth to the rumors regarding Jerome Corsi running against the illegal senator from Mass. in 2008?
Once again, solid analysis from Common Tator. Common Tator's posts on FR are must-read for me, and I usually end up agreeing with his analysis.
I spent a month in Ohio on business during the fall of 2002 (mainly in Columbus and southern Ohio), and was overwhelmed by the full-court press of the Ohio Republican Party organization. They had bought seemingly every other TV commercial window for everyone from Governor Taft down to local state representatives. So, I saw plenty of Betty Montgomery, Ken Blackwell, Jim Petro, and others on the tube. It was a well-oiled, focused, successful machine. I realize that not every GOP office holder there is a conservative. However, the party there does a really good job electing candidates. The problem is that the GOP establishment is not totally conservative, and produces politicians along the lines of DeWine, Voinovich, and Taft. Granted, it is an improvement over senators Metzenbaum and Glenn, but not quite what we as conservatives would prefer.
I would love to see Ken Blackwell elected governor, then move on to higher office. I hope what you are saying about that primary is not true, but you make good points about the Montgomery organization. I don't remember...where does Montgomery stand on abortion? If I remember right, she was kinda squishy on it..I hope I'm wrong. If the tea leaves read in favor of Montgomery, maybe Blackwell could run for Senate if Kasich decides not to..one could only hope, as he is one of the good guys.
As for DeWine, I was hoping someone would take him on. He is a worm of the highest order, up there with his buddy McCain. Kasich would be really good, and would probably clean his clock in a primary, unless DeWine slimed him with skeletons that may or may not be in his closet. You are right..bringing McCain in would be a kiss of death in a GOP primary.
As for Strickland, he would be a formidable candidate. He is a former minister from southern Ohio that knows how to talk to rural people and church people, yet remain a staunch liberal Democrat. And, after redistricting stretched his district up into Traficant's old district in Youngstown, he has obtained wider name recognition in the state. He would be a tough, but beatable candidate for senator or governor. DeWine would have a hard time beating him (after hacking off his GOP base), but Kasich, Blackwell, and probably Montgomery could beat him in a statewide race.

Kasich was the Chair of the House Budget Committee under Newt Gingrich following the 1994 elections and led the budget battles which brought us close to balance.
He got a lot of air time, and was impressive for how hard he worked to get the budget under control. It was a real loss when he quit Congress. It would be good to have him back as senator. DeWine appears to have a terminal case of Beltway Fever, thus ruining him for further useful service to the nation.
Ditto. Every week on his show when he announce "Live From Columbus Ohio" I get a sense of beaming pride... (I live in Columbus, too).

You're right. IIRC he was not at all supportive of the Swift Boat Vets. Very disappointing.
