I FEAR FOR MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN
Jeff Head Personal BLOG space ^ | May 26, 2005 | Jeff Head

Today, May 26, 2005, the American public and people all over the world witnessed a spectacle on the floor of the US Senate. A US Senator from Ohio, Senator Voinovich, broke down on the floor of the Senate and cried as he expressed his opposition to President Bush's nomination for UN Ambassador, John Bolton. In his impassioned and (apparently) sincere plea, he cried and told America and the world how he was unwilling to "risk" our representation at the UN to Mr. Bolton, and how he, Senator Voinovich feared for his children and grandchildren.

Apparently in considering Mr. Bolton, Senator Voinovich was not present at the confirmation hearings where Bolton testafied and has not met with Mr. Bolton. This alone makes one suspicious of the true nature of today's spectacle.

But, a grandfather fearing for his children and grandchildren is not something to take lightly or cavalierly dismiss. As the father of five children, and the grandfather of three grandchildren with a fourth on the way, I know this to be true. So, I wanted, grandfather to grandfather...father to father...to respond to Senator Voinovich.

I understand his feelings. I too fear for my children and grandchildren.

But I do not fear having a man such as John Bolton as our Ambassador...I fear NOT having a man such as Mr. Bolton as our Ambassador to the UN.

quite a few old timers

I trust you're referring to FReeper years and not dog years. :-) While I enjoy getting to know new FReepers, some of the "old timers" have built either personal or online relationships that really have endured -- except for the whacked out eat-our-own crowd who have done more harm than help. God sorts them out in the end!

Contrary to Washington DC's wishes that fire just keeps burning hotter and cannot be extinguished in an old geezer! Thank the Lord!

It's not going to be easy. The "blue blood" machine here really is entrenched, as Blackwell is finding. But I think if he gets the money, he'll beat the other two candidates and win the governorship. Then, look for him eight years from now as a GOP presidential candidate. I predict he will be our first black president.

Would you please do me a favor and send your wonderful article to Senator John Thune. He is flipping and voting against Mr. Bolton's nomination. (revenge for the Ellsworth "brac") I would, but I'm techno-challenged (and old) and don't know how to do it.

Thanks so much for all the wonderful contributions you have made over the years to this forum. I always look for your posts.

Absolutely referring to FR years and not real tread wear.

Some of the folks who have left FR are very good people that I maintain a good close relationship with, others have axes to grind that are more personal in nature than anything else IMHO.

Either way, there is a core of long time folks here at FR whose friendship and comraderie I value, irrespective of what the mods are doing, or what JR's position of every issue is (and I have a great deal of respect for what JR has done with FR in terms of energizing people and getting them involved in the process through the online/internet experience...for that alone he deserves significant respect and praise whatever other differences people may have with him...it's his property).

Anyhow, as to the subject and matter at hand...I believe Voinovitch's play and by association the dems play on this matter is going to backfire on them if the other conservative members of the senate will simply stick to their guns and right to their faces, call their bluffs.

Amen bro. The older we get, the more we have to defend in terms of liberty (extended family, etc.), and the less we personally have to lose in terms of our own years remaining. Makes for a hot fire indeed.

I doubt that George Washington would have thought much of Voinovich's performance. You can bet the Red Chinese were pleasantly surprised at this display of unmanliness.

I just sent the entire text of the article to Senator Thune.

You can easily send a message to him by using this site...

Senator John Thune's US Senate Site

and clicking on the "Contact Us" option near the top right of the page, just below and to the left of the Seal.

Thanks so much Jeff.

I've already contacted him several times. Just didn't know how to send your article. He has received major money from us in the past and we worked very hard on his campaign......so he better listen. Lots of upset people here in western South Dakota over this. He is a wonderful young man, and this is the first time I have been disappointed in him. Hopefully, someone can talk some sense into him. I know he thinks he is doing what he feels is best for South Dakota, but........we are a small part of the nation...........and the nation must come first. Divided we fall....and all that.

I really hate this 'pork barrel' stuff. It compromises the big picture.

We need a lot less politicians and a lot more statemen. A lot less "lawmakers" (we already have a bazillion too many on the books) and a lot more individuals who understand that the Constitution is about less government and limits on government.

If I ever run for office, one of the major planks will be this...simple and straight forward...the Two'fer Act. Meaning, any new law will require the elimination of two laws already on the books.

Whatever his problem is, it appears Big John will be approved, based on what is shown on the boob tube this evening. Ten day vacation, then the demos must face the fact the majority will approve him.

Your welcome. That bit of news I picked up on PBS tonight, during the Brooks/ commie Shields discussion. I hope what I reported will be the case.

I have to wonder if Voinovich is either:

A Suffering from some sort of mental crisis.......Or,

B Worried about his kids and grandkids...because he finally found out what F.B.I. files can do to a family, a reputation, a life. I think he's been threatened by likes of Reid, Clinton, Kennedy, McCain...etc...to "go along, to get along"...and if he doesn't he and his family will be ruined.

That's my story...and I'm sticking to it.

FRegards,

Something is up...and out of sorts for sure.

Whatever it is, what he did needs to be opposed and we citizens need to take it to our reps and let them know in no uncertain terms that their stay in the Senate is dependent on doing what is right. That needs to be punctuated by Voinovitch being turned out at the next cycle.

"Good...it needs to go through ASAP IMHO."

Roger that. Keep those fingers crossed. The irony is big John will probably do a great job, without making enemies. Of course, each time he is walking down a cooridore and he twitches his mussy, everyone will give him a bit of leeway.

On the BLOG page where this thread links, I have corrected most of them. I was writing that pretty quickly with some emotion and a lot of typos and errors crept in.

No need to explain, I think we all know how *that* happens. ;-)
