The Deal's No Victory
The National Review ^ | May 24, 2005 | Andrew McCarthy

I agree with John Podhoretz that politics in the real world calls for some compromise — at least when a matter of principle is not involved. But he’s dreaming if he really thinks the filibuster “compromise” struck last night in the Senate is a “victory.”

I initially felt the same outrage as you did. But after sleeping on it and cooling off abit, I think Frist will get stronger in the long run over this. The true conservatives in the senate were with HIM, not McCain. I don't think he will hesitate to pull the trigger if need be on the next go round. He only needs 2 of the stray RINOs to get it done.
I experienced the same basic sequence of thoughts as you describe here. I was initially very po'd but now think there is some gain here. We do get the 3, without having signed away any "right to fight" in the future. I do believe that Frist is preserving his options and that he does have the will to fight this to the end.

It just bugs me that their are some freepers who think that it was an actual victory.

Freepers who think that way are the reason America is in the state that it is in.

Well, I'm not in that crowd. It could turn out to be a long-term victory, but as said before I'm concerned about PR damage with the right's base.

I don't think the GOP lost anything tactically with the deal last night.

I disagree. The 'deal' agreed to by 7 pubbies, who could become democs at the drop of a hat, neutered the majority party and gave credence to to the minority. Proof positive that we need 60+ conservatives, not just republicans, in the Senate.....

It could be turned into a victory but it was a betrayal and defeat for President Bush, Senator Frist, and millions of 2004 voters.

How can it turn into a victory?

If when the Dems break their words the RINO agree to go nuclear and the MSM will cover it fairly?

If you think that will happen I dont know what to say to you.

We lost 7 GOP Senators last night offically Harry Reid is the Majority Leader of the Senate!

No, you did nothing wrong. I was reading other post that state the McCain was the winner along with the Demrats. I was just stating that I now see some logic in the fact the agreement was made. If we had chosen the "Option." The Dems were threatning a shut down. Yes, it would have made them look bad but it still would not have gotten three Judges confirmed.

Yes, I posted that under ingnorant anger and not from logic. Frist did what he had to do.

First off we dont know if those 3 will be confirmed some Dem like Boxer could decide they are extreme and block them.

And second of all why 3 instead of 10!

Had they gone nuclear we could have had 10, now we just HOPE we get three and thats IT!

After that the Dems can filibuster all they want and the GOP promises not to use the nuclear option, so who won? THE DEMS

I said "slated" to be confirmed. If the Dems filibuster, the GOP can vote for cloture with the Dem 7 helping to break the filibuster. If they go back on their word, then the GOP invokes the nuke option (and hopes the GOP 7 support it since they were again screwed by the Dems).

Circumstances can change and events can occur that the Senate has not foreseen. No one expected Sen. Wellstone's funeral to be used by the Democrats to partisan disadvantage.

If when the Dems break their words the RINO agree to go nuclear and the MSM will cover it fairly? If you think that will happen I dont know what to say to you.

It may be that enough votes will be found for cloture and there will be no more successful filibusters. In the meantime it may be that compromises on other issues may be found. The MSM will not cover anything fairly until at least one generation of them die off.

Not quite. Sen. Frist still sets the Senate agenda else none of these judges would be confirmed, not to mention other agenda items. Traitor Reid does not control Traitor McCain. Such is the nature of traitors. No one can trust them. We never had these 7 RINO traitors. We have a working plurality of votes in the high forties. We need help from current events to pull a victory from this defeat.

McCarthy's article is exactly right. It's not that well-written, but substantively it is a nearly complete answer to all the foolish talk about this being a good deal for the Republicans. The deal is, in fact, a sellout and a disaster.

Keeping hoping because the RINO 7 wont look at it as a Dem betrayal but a GOP betrayal for not trying to be nice and just throw all the conservatives overboard

Im afraid if you think this deal is any type of victory and you can trust the 7 RINOS you are showing some silliness.

I honestly don't have a problem with the deal, per se, because at least now three judges will get through that have been held up, with the GOP giving up nothing.

You call throwing away at least two qualified judges "losing nothing"? Weird math.

And the language of "extraordinary" or "exceptional" circumstances is ridiculous. And "exceptional circumstance" of a Dem is a conservative nominee breathing.
