That's fine with me - let's see which one of them will try to kill off the other first.

If you think about it, they lost the fight on 3 nominees and we lost...nothing (unless you count two nominees who would lave lost an up or down vote anyway).

The real fight got pushed up two or three months and we get three conservative judges who are on the SCOTUS fast track. That's it. It's a win, gang.

This would be a great time for Rehnquist to announce his retirement. We now have someone to put in his place the the Dems can't say "no".

Frist says he was not a party to this agreement.

Well, s**t, I guess he's proven he's not much of a leader suited for the WH, then.

Anything in this "deal" which says we won't go nuclear at some future point? Am I missing something?

Two things:
1) The six traitors that have just promised never to vote for a nuclear option.

2) If you accept this and do it tomorrow you would have to explain to J.Q.Public why a Republican party which is willing to unilaterally breach an agreement with the Democrats should be trusted with so weighty an issue.

Today was the first time that I thought this would happen. The wavering Republicans had everything to lose if their wavering didn’t result in their being empowered.

McAin is Frist's pimp. Frist is wearing a plaid skirt and sucking a lolipop. Now the President has to VETO legislation when his party controls congress. Victory at the ballot box apparently does not translate to victory in washington. The Dems have been acting like they are still in control because they simply still are in control.

I agree with your assessment, 100%. This is Demo facesaving. Someone should go on DU to see what the take is there; I bet there is severe nashing of teeth.

And with that, I bid you all a good evening, until later.

For the life of me I don't know why the Republicans caved in to these Rats. What or who are they afraid of? Howard Dean?

They are afraid of their "friends" in the media. And they hate Christian conseratives. I remember when John McCain had a complete meltdown over the base not supporting him. It's payback. Fine with me!

Are you totally stupid? You, and others, act like these same RINO's won't stop any "nuke" option in the future.

Geez, take of the blinders.

Graham says he could vote to end the filibuster in the future.

Did he say what "future" meant? The deal takes it off the table for this senate term.

Sort of, but not really. I have been calling and emailing and last night emailed Collins and Snowe of Maine and Landrieu. I pointed out that Democrat filibusters kept Janice Rogers Brown from full civil rights in the 60's and Dem filibusters are lately keeping her down from enjoying the fruits of her labors.

When I heard this "compromise" I was furious. However, if there aren't more devils in the details, it is a way for the moderate Dems to get out from under the boulder Reid, Kennedy, et al, have put on their heads. It allows immediate votes on Owens, Brown and Pryor
(by far the most controversial three)
and will not allow votes on (or will not vote for--I think will not get votes) on Saad and Myers. The Democrats reserve the right to filibuster only extreme nominees--but having confirmed the oft claimed most extreme of these nominees, it can't/won't be other nominees like them.

The Repubs reserve the right for the constitutional/nuclear option, and the Dems now see they will use it if pushed (for 4 years--OMG)
It lets moderate Dems like Lieberman do what they probably wanted to do all along--bring the nominees to the floor.

Thing I hate most is Dems saving any face at all. Harry Reid owes all these nominees an abject apology. Especially Saad, whose FBI file Reid invited people to look at. He deserves a vote, but is being sacrificed for "the good of he institution". It really is an institution--they have acted like inmates lately.

You could not be more wrong. The republican deal makers have sworn not to change the rules in this COngress. The democrats have not sworn not to fillibuster judges. Where does this leave us you ask?

With Rehnquists replacemetn fillibustered to death. That's where.

"If it wasn't for McCain et al then it would have been a complete and humiliating defeat for Reid and the Dems."

Are you sure that Frist had the votes? Let's face it... if these RINOs were actually committed to advancing these nominees, they wouldn't be signing onto the agreement.

I really wonder if perhaps Reid did have the votes of 6 RINOs, but Ben Nelson, Robert Byrd, Mary Landrieu, and Mark Pryor were afraid of their own red state constituencies. And they forced the deal.
