That's how I read it too, it's all just a smoke screen the dims could just have voted for cloture and it would have the same effect -- this is just a stall.

This is obviously McCain's revenge for the 2000 Republican primaries. What an SOB.

I predicted that the DEMs and squishy middle could damage the GOP, based in part on the mischaracterization of Frist and the GOP as having the handle on the nuclear trigger. The GOP never had that control.

A "dry run," where the GOP threatens the nuclear option but doesn't deliver it (because the DEMs approve cloture) will work in DEM favor. How? Some GOP will take the failure to execute the nuclear option as a GOP failure. They've been conditioned to think that Frist has the trigger! Also, the build up of debate for days, with no release except the vote on the nominee, will wear the Senators down.

Pull this a couple times, and the entire public will tire of what it sees as "a charade." All of that leads, potentially, to "more care" in choosing SCOTUS nominees.

I really don't think Frist would let McCain announce anything. Maybe I am in denial. At least my two Senators, Bond (R) and Talent (R) aren't there.

To all those saying a stall is not a loss, please explain your thinking? Any kind of compromise on judges tells the Democrats that a filibuster is legitimate for "advice and consent". This is a loss for the majority party who has no spine nor principles. The RINO's that caved better not get one dime from the RNC. They will, but it won't be my dime.

Correctamundo. The Republican party needs to grow up and elect some LEADERS. McCain will be on Imus bragging about his leadership for the greater good

I'm tired of Winning then losing by incompetence

We have won the WH and the past few elections...but we haven't won all these RHINO's seats yet (and they are part of the game) - We just need to take a few of these RHINIO's out next primary cycle. Simple as that.

But we can't blow all sorts of BS smoke that the DEM's won on this - They simply haven't - We won on most accounts here and punted on the others -

All this means is we will be right back here in a few months over a supreme court nominee (so be it!) - In the mean time we can get some other important legislation passed (Soc Sec Reform for starters).

You're right...the Republicans definitely got the better end of this deal. I wish everyone here would stop their knee-jerk reactions.

No way. R's were within hours of 7 for 7 nominees. They traded this away for only 3 of 7. And for what? Even the Dems get to buy time to 'turn' anohter vote or tow against the filibuster; and of course up and thru 2006.

.This is a goofy "deal" I think all it does is delay the option, not get rid of it..

Oh...the Filabuster of Judicial nominees will absolutely GO DOWN........THE FIRST TIME THE GOP is in the MINORITY and tries to FILABUSTER a DIM POTUS nominee.

It will be done with nary a word from the MSM. That sound you hear will be the GOP going apoplectic, but NO ONE WILL LISTEN.

Thanks for those words of sanity.

We hate the participants but in the end we have won the judges most important to us.

Owen, Brown, Pryor....and the others save two will get a vote.

Can someone tell me what this means for the impending Supreme Court fight? Can we count on these Democrats to support a Bush nominee to the Supreme Court?
McCain being the media darling again. Even Fox News is praising the "compromise." And people think Fox is conservative. Blah.

There's no leadership here. Frist is in control, not McManchurianCain. They have done nothing but made a deal amongst themselves.

Yes but, when they take a cloture vote these people will vote for cloture, assuring the 60 votes necessary to cut off debate and the "Nuclear Constitutional Option" goes pfff!! It won't be necessary. Thus the judicial system will be controlled form the center, not the right or the left.

Agreed. Which is why I'd rather see Hillary win over him. McStain is more dangerous.

I'd agree, but both are equal among power hungry pretenders and they're both dangerous tyrants. Neither can win the Presidency or we're all doomed.

"Big deal. I will bet you a month's salary the Democrats won't even give a single nominee an up or down vote."

So what if they do, you nuke em and also make political hay over the disingenuous liars that they are
