PROGRAM -- (Senate - May 20, 2005)

[Page: S5714] GPO's PDF

---

Mr. CORNYN. Mr. President, on Monday, the Senate will resume consideration of the nomination of Priscilla Owen to serve as a circuit judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Monday will be the fourth consecutive day the Senate considers the Owen nomination.

Over the past 3 days, a number of Members, on both sides of the aisle, have come to the floor to speak on the nomination. We have conducted over 25 hours of debate, and we will continue on Monday. Moments ago, we filed a cloture motion on the nomination, and that will ripen on Tuesday of next week.

On behalf of the majority leader, I remind my colleagues the leader has announced our next rollcall vote will occur Monday afternoon at 5:30. That vote will be on a motion to instruct the Sergeant at Arms to request Senators' attendance. Senator Frist will have more to say about next week's session on Monday.

Is the Senate pulling an all-nighter? Frist is ready to go I think he wants the Rinos to have to vote against him(Hagel, McCain) so in 08' it is a issue in the primaries.

Lets have the Republicans vote AGINAST cloture..just so we can make sure that this issue is resolved. They vote against Cloture and Frist gets the opportunity to appeal to the chair for a ruling...otherwise I have a feeling we will be doing this again real soon...end it now!

Hi,

Just an update to let you know I have not forgotten. I finally broke down and bought a mandolin. Going back to playing and creating "grass" is more difficult than I thought. My attempts as "grass" all came out sounding like they were written for Ray Price.

Wonders never cease. I got four one night bookings in June. I will be singing (opening) with assorted bands. It will be the first time I have played for money since 1965.

I did a bunch of my songs at a "Sing for your supper" party yesterday. A guy that books shows came up and asked me if I could work some of his shows. He said I sounded very good. I think "sounded very good" is synonymous with "works very cheap."

I am going to try to write two or three of the songs we talked about this week.I will let you hear them as soon as I can write something I am not ashamed of.

I want recordings of all of the dem Senator reactions to this speech as they sit there in their offices watching it on tv. A bank bill and Henry Clay now. Thomas Hart Benton angrily rebuked his collegue's effort to tamper with extended debate.

He needs to bring them all to the Floor en masse.

If they have had a Judiciary Com. hearing, they need to be bundled as a Package. Bringing Owen first, was a Mistake.

Brown is the one the dumbs fear most, bc there is no way she can be appointed to SCOTUS without killing them.

Democrats may capitulate, at long last, to do some soul searching after Brown gets confirmed.

Sure they did (1.). That's why you generally had to be a property owner (eg, $50 worth of property) to vote, so that the vote of the poor who worked for rich manufacturers would not be beholden to their masters. The answer was to disallow voting for non-property owners. Now an amendment that requires tax-paying as a voting prerequisite, I'm for that.

(2.) They certainly were aware of 'professional' lawmakers are far back as the Roman Senate and as recently as the British Parliament.

Worst mistake the GOP ever made was voluntary term limits.
