Can China Defeat the United States in a Conventional War?
May 20, 2005 | comtedemaistre

Every day, the economic power and political influence of Red China continues to increase. I am, however, interested in knowing how powerful China is militarily. Is China strong enough to defeat the US in a conventional war? The latest I heard is that they have a total of 10 million trained to serve in their military, including reserves. I would especially like to hear from Freeper veterans as well as those serving in the military, on the potential threat that China poses to the United States.

I am an overseas Chinese living in the Far East, ( not China), and I am NOT a citizen of China

Then I'm going to guess you're in Singapore or someplace else in Malaya (or whatever they're calling it these days --Indonesia?).

They actually do not teach this kind of stuff much in American Universities any longer. Apart from the military academies, there are only two schools I'm aware of that still teach military history. For sure one is Ohio State, but I cannot for the life of me, remember the other.

Nowadays, it's considered rude to study warfare or to revel in American/Western victories over "the victims of colonization" or other such nonsense. Trust me, had the shoe been on the other foot, Africans would have been taking Europeans as slaves or Chinese seamen sailing the Straits of Magellan. It just so happens that the impulses that led to these events occurred in the west, for better or worse. The response to those impulses, however, was the pure application of culture.

The King of Spain wanted to use the Sea Route to find a way to China to trade on silk and spices The Arabs already controlled the overland trade route, ie the Silk-Route

So, it turned out the $$$$$$$ was the incentive for the King of Spain to finace the overseas vogages

(By the way, I could also be living in Australia or New Zealand)

Did you read the last part of my post?

That is why they won't look for a military solution to Taiwan ...at least while a Republican is in office.

Psuedo-intellectual liberals do not know how to fight a war.

"If China was to seize Taiwan, does the US have the capability, as well as the will, to liberate the territory?

The capability? There is no serious question of that. As to the will, well that would depend on who controls the Congress and which side the media wanted to be on, probably not a good thing if you are living in Taiwan.

Frankly I'm surprised there would even be a question of who would have military superiority. The real question is would the military be allowed to fight to win.
