Slovakia will discriminate atheists, MEP’s say
slovensko ^ | Tue 17 May 05

Slovakia is close to starting discriminating atheists. According to Dutch MEP Sophie Veld, the Vatican will interfere in the civil lives of the citizens. Veld is one of 52 MEPs who signed a letter sent to Slovak Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda, protesting against the proposed treaty between Slovakia and the Holy See regarding the "Right to Exercise Conscientious Objection". The treaty is not unique to Slovakia, Veld admits.

Atheists in the USA have a successful time in discriminating against Christians.

"Lastly, those are not all to be tolerated who deny the being of God. Promises, covenants, and oaths, which are the bonds of human society, can have no hold upon an atheist. The taking away of God, though but even in thought, dissolves all; besides also, those that by their atheism undermine and destroy all religion, can have no pretence of religion whereupon to challenge the privilege of toleration." - John Locke, A Letter Concerning Toleration

And getting the state to discriminate against Christians in violation of the free exercise clause of the first amendment to the US Constitution.

Good... atheists are skum.

For one to 'not believe' is one thing, but to be so motivated as to make a 'relgion' out of not believing indicates deep psycological issues that can only have negative effects in all areas of society and culture.

Very Christian answer! :)

As for atheism being a religion, I think you are misinformed. It is simply dis-belief in a deity. Nothing more.

Ok, I clicked on the link and the story is one paragraph. What exactly is the proposed treaty between Slovakia and the Holy See regarding the "Right to Exercise Conscientious Objection"? From the little that is in the paragraph I have no way of knowing what it has to do with atheists.

If only the Supreme Court agreed with you

It is simply dis-belief in a deity. Nothing more.

If you mean doubt I'll grant you that. If you mean rejection -- as in 'I know there is no god & all who disagree should not be taken seriously ', then you have a religion, and a rather irrational one.

I think if you go in a huff because people don't take your views seriously then it maybe shows your own beliefs are weak.

I think that it would still qualify as a belief, not a religion. There is no atheist *revealed* book, no atheist ceremonies, no atheist church... none of the many aspects of a religion. To call it a religion is to make that term lose it's meaning.

Who is in a huff here? You or me?

Don't be so literal. Re-set your petted lip. :)

To call it a religion is to make that term lose it's meaning.

The Supreme Court in 1963 Abington Township v. Schempp/Murray vs. Curlett upheld that Baltimore's school board violated William Murray's religious beliefs as an atheist because the school district had prayer and Bible readings.

Our courts consider atheism to be a religion.

If atheism was merely "a belief," a true atheist would simply smile at school prayer.

Now, no need for huffiness, just a simple question :-)

I'm not interested in what the Supreme Court said. Atheism touches on religion, but in and of itself is not a religion, not in any strict sense.

As the poster of this article has not yet responded, maybe you could help. What exactly is the article saying? In what way is this treaty to deal with atheists? Is their status to be changed? I can get no clue what this article (paragraph really) i saying is happening. When I clicked onto the link I was hoping there would be more info, but alas the paragraph that was reprinted here IS the whole article.

Well I am. In fact, it's probably the only definition of the nature of atheism that I am interested in.

If you want to think atheism is not a religion, fine. What is the source of atheist values anyway?

"What exactly is the article saying?"

I have no idea. Grzegorz 246 is Polish. It sounds like he took if from Slavic website & put it through translator software.

I wasn't trying to defend atheism, just saying that the SC's opinion may be interesting in a legal sense, but not very enlightening otherwise. I don't want to have to depend on them for the proper definition of ANYTHING. My assertion that atheism is not a religion is in no way an endorsement.

I am glad I am not the only one who isn't sure what this article is saying lol. I take it that the treaty in question isn't good for atheists, but it would be nice to know in what way. I agree, it sounds like it went through some sort of translator software.
