Lockland police are still investigating. They're not sure why or how long the pit bull laid on the baby, named Maria, in the house in the 300 block of Williams Street.
The baby was on the couch and the mother, Sarah Statzer, was in the kitchen when it happened just before 5 a.m. Sunday.
When rescuers arrived, the baby was bleeding from the nose, Stinson reported. She was transported to Children's Hospital.
Police are awaiting autopsy results.
A neighbor, Sally Clark, cried as she spoke about the child's death.
"She was born a month early, a little premature. I can't imagine what they're going through," Clark said.
Clark and her husband, Brad, said Statzer and the child's father are good parents.
"Both are very overprotective of their kids," Brad Clark said. "They're always aware of their whereabouts. They've been great neighbors and great parents as well."
The family requested that the dog be put down, News 5 reported.
Devil Dog, Hound of Hell, Ping...
Why wasn't the baby in a crib or bassinet??
Idiot mother, leaving an infant on a couch, with a dog in the room.
Particularly a baby that was only 1 month old and premature to boot. Tiny little thing like that could have been smothered by a teacup poodle or by just getting wedged into the cushions.
Oh sure, blame the dog! It's the mothers fault. Period.
Do victims of suffocation bleed from the nose?
