According to broadcast reports this evening, Brian Nichols, the suspect in the Fulton County Courthouse shootings in Atlanta on March 11, has had a jailhouse conversion to Islam.
Nichols, who was indicted last Thursday on 54 charges, including four counts each of murder and felony murder, has requested -- and received -- permission to talk to a local Imam. Nichols will be allowed to pray in accordance to the tenants of Islam as well.
The indictment includes 18 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, 7 counts of kidnapping, and five counts of hijacking a motor vehicle.
As you'll remember, Nichols was being readied for a rape trial when he overpowered and severely injured his guard, entered the courtroom and shot to death Judge Rowland Barnes and the court stenographer. Nichols subsequently escaped the courthouse, killing a Fulton County Sherrif's deputy, and later killing a US Customs agent before his capture in Gwinnett County.
Fulton County DA Paul Howard has stated that he plans on requesting the death penalty in Nichols' case.

It acknowledges there are a few good points to be made.
"6. Conversion is confused with a deep desire to please God. “What God looks at is the attitude of your heart – is pleasing him your deepest desire?... Will you make pleasing God the goal of your life? There is nothing that God won’t do for the person totally absorbed with this goal” (p76). This sounds great, and I agree that God does not look at mere outward appearances, but that our affections and attitudes matter to Him. But the integrity or sincerity of my desire to please God is not fundamentally what God looks at as saving – otherwise salvation would not be wholly of grace, as Warren would wholeheartedly agree, and millions of devout Muslims would be on their way to heaven, which Warren would wholeheartedly deny."(emphasis added)
I'm not entirely confident Rick Warren would wholeheartedly deny it. Maybe behind closed doors he would.
I'm certainly not going to argue with you, but always find it interesting that people think they know more than they could possibly know, having not been part of the situation.

Christianity has one tenant. Christ, who is God incarnate, died for the sins of whoever puts their faith and trust in him.
I think you are missing the underlying theme of the comments that many of us are making. They are aimed at the hollow shell of the PDL and the hype that Warren's works based empire received following this tragedy. God was placed in the background and a man was trotted out as a hero. We see all this hype as a clear break from the idea of Sola Deo Gloria (to God alone goes the Glory)
As I have said here many times, PDL is all fluff, no stuff.

Christians are too gullible these days and, you're correct, most of it centers around a work-based mentality instead of a changed nature given to us by God. Christians see something believing it is "God-inspired" and rush to it like moths to a flame. This case just underscores this point. Doesn't this seem like the perfect environment for the Anti-Christ?
There are a few. but their breed is getting rarer and rarer these days. They are being slowly killed off by the internet, MS Word, and the overuse of the AP wire service.
