There is an internet vandal who defaces Free Republic with very gross pictures (homosexual sex and stuff from rotton.com) as well as posting "ALL YOU F***** N*****S & JEWS SHOULD BE LYNCHED".
He pings a variety of people to his post, ensuring that the trash is still in their My Posts lists.
To me, this isn't the milder form of harassment that Eschoir engaged in so many years ago. The very worst he would do is ask if you ever committed sodomy, and he once used the screen name "Paula Jones Tw*t". This is mild.
What this sick piece of work is doing is much more egregious. I believe it crosses the line into criminal defacement and restraint of trade. Are there any Free Republic lawyers (especially prosecutors) who can address this issue, and are there any private detectives with internet savvy that will help track the identity of this person down?

Yes, sort of. You can use your HOSTS file to direct particular domain names to a null IP (127.0.0.1). For example if you put:
127.0.0.1 rotten.com
into your host files you computer will never access anything from rotten.com.
The HOSTS file can also be very useful for blocking popups and many types of ads.

Yes, very slow.
How often do you clear your cache? as in tools/Internet options/delete files? Anything that slows your own computer down can cause a double post.

The easiest way I have found to get a quick response from the moderators is to use the abuse button...making sure to use only a few words so they don't have to wade through a booklength post to get to the point.

There should be a law against what I call Ambush Porno. Remember the Janet Jackson moment? Ambush porno. In a place that is devoted to not displaying porno, such as our forum, ambush porno should result in jail time.
A comment I made to one of my FReeper friends yesterday, after I was 'attacked' by the pictures at the Canteen, is that it is possible to track the IP address from which this guy is sending his trash.
Now, the tricky part.
If he is not working alone, and my guess he is not, there are going to be several computers involved. It is still possible to get them - as even if there are 20 or more participating,the addresses CAN be trapped.
There is no way this guy - or group - can have access to all IP addresses everywhere (rather, it is highly unlikely), and eventually they can be caught. It is just a matter of setting up the system, and waiting patiently.
My husband used to run an ISP (still does on a more low-key basis) and we have had somewhat of the same problem in the past. There are programs which will trap EVERY incoming IP, and capture the information being transferred.
In addition to a legal FReeper who can find a way to bring criminal charges - we need a computer engineer FReeper, familiar with the hacking system, to grab this person or group.
It may take a while, but it can be done.
Yesterday made me literally sick at my stomach - and when you have to begin to be careful at a place you once thought of as 'home', the time has come to take action. Trolling around and shooting your mouth off is one thing. Subjecting 'innocents' (we have Families who come to the Canteen to give and recieve support regarding our troops)is going TOO far - and I am in full agreement with ANY ANSWER that can be decided upon that will stop the problem and keep our reputation respected.
To retaliate at a suspected site would not be an answer, but catching the person(s) responsible for planting this vile seed is well within reason.
The war which began between the Republicans and Democrats however long ago, is quickly escalating into a 'good' vs. 'evil' fight, and I fear it will only get worse. We, as FReepers, must stand our ground, stick together, keep bickering among ourselves to a minimum, and stay strong. Keep that 'ABUSE' button close at hand. JK
I am not a computer Guru, but I know that if the pictures are planted as a virus - one cannot simply hit the button and get rid of the post.
It is much the same way in which the web works - everything is linked to another. Many of the viruses that circulate on the net are in email, as most of you know, but the virus IS THE EMAIL ITSELF.
This guy must KNOW what he is doing, or it would not take as long to get rid of the stuff.
Another thought - it takes a few minutes or so to 'capture' the IP. It's like keeping someone on the line long enough to trace a phone call. Even though technology has advanced, it still takes time.
tracking and trapping, with the proof and ability to prosecute is essential.
I do agree - if you find one of these wile posts - STAY OFF THE THREAD!!! It makes it easier for the moderators to track and trap. Hit 'abuse', and get out. JK
