It was really strange to see him commenting on the new Pope - but to be fair to him, he was largely supportive of Pope Benedict XVI. I can only presume he was partially motivated by the fear of excommunication.

His kind words about the Holy Father would normally make me more sympathetic. However everything the Lib Dems have said during this campaign have made me ferociously angry at them (particularly about Iraq and taxation). Labour runs a close second.

What a sad comment that "Labour" is the middle party. IIRC, it used to be further left than LDP, but I can't be sure.
