Conservatives are actually DOWN -0.3% so far in popular vote; it is the LibDems and the ultra-right wing fringe parties UKIP and BNP (ugggggghhhh!!!) that made the gains. 75 years ago or so, in another country, the Reds were rioting on a regular basis, the economy was in the toilet, and the middle class was getting scared. Then a man came along who promised to get the country back on its feet, and whose supporters had no hesitation at wading in on the Reds with fists, sticks, and whatever. This impressed a bunch of people, and they voted him into office.
And they didn't mind his funny little mustache at all
