Anti-abortion T-shirts Cause Concern at Roosevelt
The Iowa Channel ^ | April 28, 2005

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Two students at Roosevelt High School say their rights were violated when they were asked to remove their T-shirts.

Sisters Brittany and Tamera Chandler said Tuesday was Pro-Life Day, so they wore T-shirts with a picture of an unborn baby and the phrases, "She hears, kicks and feels pain" and "Abortion kills kids."

"I figured it would open some people's eyes ... that abortion is wrong," said Tamara Chandler, a senior.

Anita Micich, principal of Roosevelt, said students became upset about the shirts and a concerned teacher referred the girls to the office. Officials then asked the girls to cover the shirts or remove them, NewsChannel 8 reported.

The girls removed their shirts but Brittany Chandler said she fought the decision.

"I don't see what the problem is. I'm standing up for what I believe," Brittany Chandler said.

Micich said the shirts were an issue of disrupting the educational environment and not an issue of expression of freedom.

Chuck Hurley, of Iowa Family Policy Center, said the disruption had to be substantial and material.

"It can't just be offensive," he said.

Supporters of the girls compared the case to Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District. In that case, the U.S. Supreme Court said students do not leave their free speech rights at the school door.

"Students don't shed constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate," Hurley said.

The girls, who say they were threatened with suspension, said they want an apology. School officials denied the allegation.

It's funny you should mention school uniforms, as there is a debate about their implementation in my area. I have read the two main arguments against them:

1. They will cost too much. Bull! A pair of properly-sized khakis and a white button-up shirt will cost no more than the crap parents normally send their kids to school in.

2. It deprives kids of expressing their individuality. Bull, again! They are supposed to be there to learn (wild concept, huh?), not put on fashion shows.

Look, you're getting close. Being "pro-choice" means you really are evil.

Some schools don't allow clothing with words or pictures on them. Was this one of those types of schools, that prohibits any kind of wording/photo on a shirt?

Well, I guess I still have too much faith in humanity. That is, unless you mean "evil" as in "naturally depraved" in a Judeo-Christian sense. In that case, I would say yes, and that without Christ, I am evil too. If we mean evil like Hitler evil or Stalin evil, I think most people (at least young people) are really more just deceived or so caught up in their own hedonistic desires that they choose not to look at hard facts. Notice that it's pretty hard to get someone who is "pro-choice" to even say the word abortion. It's always "pro-choice" or "reproductive freedom." If someone can stare the reality of abortion in the eye, come to an understanding down to their soul of what it means, and then still support abortion, then the "evil" term might start being appropriate. However, I still subscribe to the old saying "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar," and I would hate to make someone even more entrenched in their pro-abortion views because of my rhetoric. I guess I'm still young enough to be idealistic about changing people (maybe naively so, I'll concede).

Hey, sometimes you run out of flypaper. Eventually there's going to be some sort of showdown with these guys and it'll probably be started by them.

I'm sorry, I know that many people support uniforms for schoolkids, but I don't because they are unAmerican! This nation was founded in part to protect individual liberty. If we as a nation lose this, we wre in trouble. A large part of the educational process should be the child learning how to dress, to function in society, and yes, to express themselves. Uniforms destroy all of this, and are better relegated to the dictatorships. Why do you think the Muslims use the burquas for their women? Sounds like what you want here.

It's pretty subjective. I ran the Homosexual Agenda Ping list for over a year (I think), and I saw a lot of articles I found compelling/important/interesting, but couldn't include them, as they weren't on topic.

I see the destruction of morality, both private and public, and it heralds the destruction of what makes human society human. The morals as inculcated in, for instance, the 10 Commandments, are not sectarian as some would say, but are universal guidelines for humanity, and they are essentially the same in every monotheist religion.

The elimination of all reference to God in public is part and parcel of the destruction, so I cover that as well.

Does this explain enough?

So the guy with the death metal t-shirt (with the dripping blood and the skull) will get sent home as well? I doubt it.

You are free to express yourself at state school as long as what you are expressing is in complete agreement with the unionists and nihilists who control the system.

And with the Republican politicians who ultimately are in charge of the national school system atm.. who by their actions are in total agreement with the unionists and nihilists.

I wore uniform for years and I never felt my freedom was stolen. I actually loved it. Yes, yes. I was the most strange specimen in my school, as all the other girls hated it.
