CONGRESS TRIES AGAIN FOR A DOLLAR COIN (WITH KLINTON, YET)
CNN ^ | 4/27/2005 | Gordon T. Anderson

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -After two bellyflops, Congress is considering a dollar coin again. This time it might actually work. Like lemmings rushing into the fjords, Congress cannot seem to resist a leap into the dollar-coin money pit. Despite two wildly unsuccessful attempts to introduce a dollar coin, legislators are trying again. This time, however, lemmings might fly. On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed a bill to create a new $1 coin, which would accompany the current Sacagawea piece. The measure enjoyed enormous bipartisan support, passing by a vote of 422 to 6.

The first Euro currency in paper is the 5 euro note

The one and two euro are in the form of a coin.

This has lead to a bit of inflation since the coins are treated much like dimes and quarters. The one cent euro coin is positivly TINY. It would fit comfortably, with room to spare, on a key on your key board.

The paper dollar is anti-inflationary from a psychological sense and must be kept.

The dollar coins are pure PC crap to try in impose some form of leftist icon on the dollar.

BTW: Some places do refuse the one dollar coins in any form.

Are they going to do another WASTED TAX DOLLARS ad campaing again?

If they want a coin to succeed make it 1950's sized and put Ronald Reagan on the coin.

Naw, you can't loose pennies. If you did how could stores make you think you are getting a better deal by charging 9.99 in stead of 10.00. I suppose they could charge 9.95, but that doesn't look like MegaSavings to me. Besides, a nickel is too valuable to flick at people, or to toss of tall buildings, or to derail trains with. Also nickels just don't work to well in the Roll-A-Penny machine.

Supporters realize that the dollar coin is the Rodney Dangerfield of American money. So they make clear that any new coin would augment -- not replace -- paper currency.

ACH!

NO! That's backwards. The only way a dollar coin will work is if the paper dollar is eliminated. As long as there are paper dollars, the dollar coins will go directly into futile coin collections that everyone will have.

The only way to go to a dollar coin is:

1) Eliminate the paper one dollar bill.

2) Produce a one dollar coin that works (and put a president on it).

3) Print lots and lots of two dollar bills.

If it's not done this way, it won't work.

I have put the main reason for the failure in bold:

"In 1979, the Treasury Department introduced the Susan B. Anthony dollar, and produced nearly one billion of them between 1979 and 1981.

The Carter administration promoted it with a vengeance, calling it "the dollar of the future."

They hyped its cost-savings -- metal lasts much longer than paper, so you don't need to mint as often as you print.

They hyped its subject -- Anthony was the first woman (if you don't count Lady Liberty) to appear on U.S. money since the early 19th century.

They even hyped its design -- the 11-sided polygon (a hendecagon) was meant to mark a clear difference between the coin and all others.

Despite the fanfare, the public hated it. The Anthony dollar quickly became another quaint relic of the Seventies, like the AMC Pacer. "

Well, if they want to make it the same size as a quarter, why not make the "Clinton dollar" the color pink??? or maybe blue???

Neil Armstrong is on the back of the Ohio quarter...

Much better than having John Glenn on the back of the coin.

If they EVER want to have a usable $1.00 coin they better make it NOTICEABLY BIGGER than the other coins.

"Why spend more money on dies and design, etc...?"

If you had read the article you would know that when they make coins people don't spend they make money. With the state quarters many people hoard a certain amount of them as collectables. Since it cost about a nickel to make the quarter the gov't makes about 20 cents for every quarter kept out of circulation. It's estimated the government has made about 5 billion on the quarters so far. Imagine how much they would be raking in on the dollars (one planned for each US president)

Interesting idea from a purely collecting standpoint. At least they aren't going to try to force them into circulation....

Simply make em larger than a damned quarter, and you might be able to get them to be used! Why they required the 1999 coins to meet the old Susan B specs in size and weight was beyond me... the only damn vending machines that ever accepted the Susan B were the ones at the POST OFFICE... so who cared about backwards compatibility.

When they make them look like this, and make them of silver again, I'll be interested. Until then, I'll settle for the worthless paper one:
