NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - State Sen. Tom McClintock, the rock-ribbed conservative who made headlines two years ago when he ignored his fellow Republicans' pleas to drop out of the race to replace Gov. Gray Davis and leave the field open for Arnold Schwarzenegger, is getting an early start in the 2006 race for lieutenant governor.
Campaigning in Orange County on Saturday, McClintock told members of the group Principles Over Politics that the job appeals to him because the lieutenant governor presides over the state Senate and is California's chief executive whenever the governor is out of state.
"It places the office in the position of being a great generator of reforms," McClintock said. He also defended Schwarzenegger against complaints that in recent weeks he has backed off efforts to overhaul the state's pension system and institute tighter budget controls after his proposals came under sharp criticism.
"We have to bear in mind that political battles aren't tidy affairs," he said.
McClintock and Schwarzenegger were at odds for a time in 2003 when the legislator became the only major Republican to refuse to drop out of the race to replace Davis if he was recalled after Schwarzenegger became the front-runner to replace him. The two put those differences aside last year when Schwarzenegger campaigned for McClintock's re-election to the state Senate.
McClintock is making his fourth campaign for statewide office, having lost the gubernatorial race in 2003 and two previous bids for state controller. First elected to the state Assembly in 1982 at age 26, he served there until 1992 and again from 1996 to 2000. First elected to the state Senate in 2000, term limits will prevent him from seeking another term there in 2008.
He is the first Republican to announce his candidacy lieutenant governor in 2006.

Then they would be wrong. He couldn't even win his own Senate district during the recall election. They spoke then and said NO THANKS to Tom.
I'm a bit puzzled of your strong hatred towards McClintock. Can you please tell me in a calm matter why you are against him? Is it because he is too conservative for you? or is that you simply rather have a liberal Republican in office over a strong moral conservative guy like McClintock?
Tom McClintock over the years has made many strides in my state such as his grassroots campaign since 1998 to permanently banned the car tax as well as abolishing the gas tax. He has made many speeches on how California must go back to where it was when it was a Golden State.
I'm sorry but you are not even from my state so I don't understand why you are not accepting reality here. California is under a tremendous pressure to revitalize its economy after years of budget crisis as well as a very devastating energy crisis. The liberal Dems have a majority in the state legislature and they are trying to hurt this state by having a very anti-business legislation and they're not doing anything to solve California's already anti-Business climate.
Even though that I may not be a big fan of Governor Schwarzenegger, at least he is heading the right course by implementing what a Governor McClintock would do such as reforming California's workers compensation, rolling back the car tax to previous levels, and preventing illegal aliens from getting a California Driver License.
A Lt. Governor McClintock as well as Schwarzenegger as Governor would create a dynamic team to get California rolling back in the right direction. I hope that once Schwarzenegger leaves office by the end of his second term that Tom McClintock will replace him as Governor of California. McClintock is the right guy we need for leadership in California because I am sick of tired of RINO's and liberals running Sacramento. And if you don't like McClintock because of his strong conservative philosophy then you are in the wrong team, my friend.
I would love for Tom to run for the US Senate race in either 2006 or 2010 but his intention is not to be in Washington DC but to be in California and focus on Calfornia's issues.
As conservative Republicans, we should do whatever we can to help support and get Tom elected in California. Because I am planning on voting for him next year in both the primary as well as the general election.
Tom McClintock is the only pro-life, pro-second amendment, pro-business, anti-gay marriage, anti-illegal alien, as well the only conservative Republican candidate in California that will make a huge difference once he gets elected to replace outgoing liberal Dem Cruz Bustamante. And I know that Tom will beat liberal flower-child John Garamendi next year for the Lt. Governor's race.
Because he's a kook who worked hard to try and see that the democrats held on to the Governor's office.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if McClintock pulls this off. The California Republican Rennaisance continues!
And despite that Arnold was generously forgiving, campaigned for McClintock, and raised a large amount of campaign funds for him.
And it's kind of funny that the Arnold haters are asking about "hating" McClintock.
McClintock should work for a thinktank, he has some good ideas, but his uncompromising nature precludes him from being an effective anything in politics. He voted against his own bill, on car licence fees, because he didn't get everything.

Watch those typos, at least in the title.
"McClintock is making his fourth campaign for statewide office, having lost the gubernatorial race in 2003 and two previous bids for state controller. As I said, a perfect time for him to retire from politics and join a thinktank.
I think the combination of Tom and Arnold (that's weird), would be a very good one. Of course, I'll be gone from California so I DON'T GIVE A DAMN!!!!!!
He is not trust-able any longer and here is a little of why I say that.
First, I used to like him. He took some bold positions and said some unpopular things that needed at times to be said out there.
Then, there was his behavior in the race for governor where he promised Issa he would leave the race rather than become a spoiler if another candidate took off more than him.
Well, he lied.
Arnold had lots more of the vote and McC was willing to split the vote that could have gone against Republicans for Bustamante.
He's not a team player.
He would be willing to sabotage the party to further his own career IMO, and I personally hope the Republican party spends millions against him to see another one runs as the Republican challenger.
I don't trust Tom McClintock. He's too in politics for Tom.
He's scary undependable for the Republican party.
Yes, he's a very INeffective legislator. And, of course, effectiveness doesn't necessarily mean passing bills. But without the respect of your colleagues and others in the legislature, you're simply not able to represent your constituents - at least the sane ones.
There are lot on this thread that worship people who are willing to screw the GOP even if it means getting in bed with the Democrats.
That would be the ones suggesting Republicans cast stupid protest votes or voting for third parties.
That's actually passive enabling of the Democrat Party.
I think Tom is out on term limits and has to revolved to another position in California politics to retain a state pay check.
In addition to your other extremely modest talents, I see you are now an expert on California. You may want to concentrate first on your own state--it could certainly use some help.
"Because he's a kook who worked hard to try and see that the democrats held on to the Governor's office."
I will have to disagree heartily with you. It is my firm belief that we absolutely needed Tom to stay in the Governor's race. Don't know if you noticed, but virtually all novice politicians (and Arnie was certainly a novice) make fatal mistakes that doom their candidacy. If that happened to Arnie, Tom was there to pick up the pieces. The LA Times certainly tried to do to Arnie what would have sunk any other GOP candidate. Tom absolutely refused to attack Arnie through the whole campaign, and he certainly could have gone that route.
Additionally, because of Tom, Arnie was forced to move to the right on at least some issues to capture conservative votes, something he never would have done if Tom had dropped out of the race. Tom is a principled conservative and a intellectual giant. I heard him speak yesterday afternoon at the CRA convention, and he was very inspiring.
McClintock gave a great speech at the CRA convention in Pomona on Saturday. Got my picture taken with him and all that. :-)
If you haven't noticed, Tom finished THIRD. He would have picked up the pieces while Bustamoney occupied the governor's office.
I guess Tom's paycheck is the one thing that these kook groups won't blame on Arnold. Its funny how they give a guy like McClintock and Tancredo (for breaking his term limits pledge and hiring illegal aliens to work on his home) a pass, but if Arnold was to scratch his nose with his left hand, they call him a socialist.
>>but if Arnold was to scratch his nose with his left hand, they call him a socialist.
Your hatred of Tom, or love for Arnold, continues to blind you from reality as you continue posting lies and falsehoods. SOS.
Appointing people like Bonnie Reiss, Terry Tamminen, Henning, et al, while supporting or promoting actions like government babysitting, conservancies, etc., makes one wonder if he isn't a socialist. I could care less if or how he scratches his nose.
