KANSAS CITY, Mo. --

Police said they arrested a man for spitting on Academy Award winning actress Jana Fonda during a book-signing stop in Kansas City Tuesday night.

Fonda, 67, spoke at Unity Temple, in The Plaza shopping district, about her new book, "My Life So Far" and her new movie with Jennifer Lopez called "Monster-In-Law."

At about 9 p.m., police said a man who had been waiting in line for about 90 minutes, passed a book to Fonda and then spit a large amount of tobacco juice into her face.

Michael A. Smith
Thy said the man then ran away and was taken into custody by off-duty officers, who were providing security for the event.

Fonda declined to prosecute the man for allegedly spitting in her face.

Michael A. Smith, 54, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, which is a city charge.

What's your point? ...Thank you Miss Manners

I am going to, for the moment, ignore the condescending and insulting manner in which you have replied. I am further going to assume that you misread my statements or did not see all of them. I am taking a leap of faith with that because if my assumptions are wrong, then your problem is far deeper then a lack of understanding.

There are two issues here, and I will be specific:

Jane Fonda -- In my opinion she committed treason and deserved to be convicted in a court of law and suffer the consequences of the judicial system. The fact that she was not tried is testimony to the willingness of those in power to either appease the left, or avoid controversy.

Michael Smith -- Although his anger is understandable and justified (his anger, not his actions), we do live in a nation guided by laws and civility. He had many actions he could have taken to show his contempt for Jane Fonda, without assaulting her. He crossed the line and charges should be filed against him. The fact that Jane Fonda has refused to file charges is testimony to her lack of courage to face what she did 35 years ago. She is willing to accept his spittle rather then face a public trial in which her past crimes would be brought up.

THAT is such a good question! Fonda never should have been allowed to return from Viet Nam! Why was she? Convorting with the enemy, and allowed to return?

Did you see the report on the Today Show! I LOVE the guy who spit in her face!

My mom's brother served 2 tours in Vietnam, and had to sneak home, because of the words and actions of Jane Fonda....She spread all kinds of lies about my wonderful, sweet, brave Uncle.

No, my mother should not be spat on. Jane needed to feel what it felt like to be spat on. She needed to know what she caused. Her words and actions caused many hard feelings.

As a Christian, Jane is probably thanking the Lord for this happening to her. Hopefully, it will be the beginning of her finally exploring the hurt and pain she caused to these fine military men; and to our country.

It is time for her to face the Veterans and listen to what they have to say. As a Christian, it is her duty to ask their forgiveness...not just for sitting on the anti aircraft gun, but for everything else she did to them. She needs to turn the other cheek, and walk the extra mile to be reconciled to these men she hurt. And the only way she is going to be able to do that, is to listen to what they have to say, and ask God to help her see what she does not now see: How they feel.

Jane Fonda also helped in the organization of a production group called the F.T.A. (F*** The Army). This group helped to set up coffee houses near military bases where they would perform anti-war derogatory-type sketches for the visiting soldiers. The coffee-house sketches were intended to counterpoint the U.S.O. shows, such as Bob Hope and other U.S.O. sponsored performers whose performances increased morale and gave positive support to American soldiers. Some of the F.T.A. coffee house employees would mingle with the soldiers to help them to "relax and unwind", while encouraging the soldiers to desert. Some soldiers alleged that they were promised jobs and money by the F.T.A. if they deserted.

Jane Fonda, in her response to allegations by returning POW's of torture and abuse at the hands of the NVC, referred to the returning POWs as being "hypocrites and liars."

The man who spit on her wasn't the "weasel" or the "White trash"....

Also, I don't know any "ladies" who would hire prostitutes for threesomes with their husbands.

What kind of "lady" would promote these sleazy actions and make money off of them?

She gained notoriety and fame off of the name of her father; from her husbands and from the awful things she did to our fighting men. She has parlayed that notoriety and fame into lots and lots of cash. The communist has lived a lavish, life all the while condemning those who secured that life for her; and condemning the government who allowed it.

She is not a lady who deserves respect. She has "issues". She is a fool who think she is wise. Sad, really.

Did you know that Fonda formed a group called, "F*** The Army"? Did she apologise for that?

As I told another poster, as a Christian, Jane has got to be very thankful that the man spit on her!

Jane is still making money on her treasonous actions, look at the book cover. She has only apologized for being photographed, not for manning an AA gun, for being photographed doing it. Her lame excuses never explained her behavior and then offered an apology as she should do.

It was illegal for her to even be in N. Viet Nam, much less volunteering to aim and operate a weapon against Americans. Every N.Vietnamese military leader that has been asked, has said that Jane Fonda helped break America's will to fight. But many Americans opposed the war and destroyed our resolve. But here's the kicker...she's the only one that went to and joined the enemies side of the battlefield.

Smith did the wrong thing for the right reason. Extremism frames the argument. Smith's behavior was necessary to understand the size of the anger patriots have for Jane Fonda. I understand and accept it and wish that I could find as effective a way of showing my bitterness to her disgraceful and unrepentant actions.

You are the one who seemed disgusted at the concept of eating at my place.

You were a stickler for "good manners".

Somehow hitting someone you hate with a pie is okay in your book, less off putting than getting spit on.

All of it requires cleanup, possibly dry cleaning, and is a shock to the system. More likely to cover the whole face with a pie as well.

Thanks for being the lone voice of sanity in this group. I realized onething though, people use my "foreign-ness" as a ploy, when they cant engage in a meaningful discussion. Ed-hominem attacks are for cowards who lack intellectual temerity... specifically, usually its dumb, semi-literate, nitwits who say such things.

And well, its not just Americans, people all over the world are becoming cruder.. there are many parts of the world where people are much worse than here.. the whole friggin planet is becoming crazier, methinks the sooner we are off this planet, the better.

Since you do not differentiate between Lemon cream pie and Tobacco spit, yes, I do not want to eat at your house.

I am also quite certain that Buster Keaton would disagree with your assessment equating being hit by a pie and hit by a slap of chewed goo.

Since we disagree on this point, there is no need to respond. I use to annually participate in a fund raiser for the local high school. I was one of several volunteers for the pie throwing contest. It was all in good fun.

I would have reconsidered my participation had it instead been a "Spit-a-wad-a-chew" Contest. Obviously, it would not have mattered to you.

Yes he was clearly White Trash. Your mother would be ashamed of any son who did such a thing.

It is interesting to see programs where old soldiers from Germany, Japan and the US and Britain get together decades later. Men who were trying desperately to kill each other are now capable of forgiving and forgetting while demented loons like this guy not only cannot accept an apology but attracts the Big Talkers from their hiding places under their beds to cheer him on.

As far as I am concerned, she got off easy from a sister whose brother served three honorable tours in Viet Nam.

My mother would spit on her herself!

You shame yourself with your presumptions.

Mr. Smith is a brave man who fought and was wounded for our freedom. He did a favor for all of us.

Anyone who would flippantly denigrate Smith's obvious strong emotional distress, such as you have, displays their own ignorance of the situation.

Step off.

I saw him being interviewed:

"No regrets! Jane Fonda caused many soldiers to be spat upon when they returned home!"

Gotta love the man!

You got that right. She also called those same POW's "liars and hypocrits" when they returned and told of their abuse.

She has never apologised for that either. She spat lots of hurtful, lying words. She hurt me and my family with her "spit"!

And Yes, I have prayed for her. The Lord knows I have. I had a lot of hope when I read that she had been saved....I would forgive her, if she would only be sorry for what she did and take responsibility for it. I know others feel the same.

She knows better than to press charges! Bet she's a bit more leery of book buyers now, LOL.

I wouldn't quibble if your mother did it. But not a man. My hunch is that Smith's background would not stand much investigation. He is apparently mentally ill at a minimum and possibly a total fraud.

It takes no bravery to assault grandmothers. I don't take anything about this revolting episode flippantly. Embarassing the Conservative cause for NO good reason is no time for flippancy. Talk about beating a dead horse.

She is not a lady who deserves respect.

Not only did she do all that wild immoral stuff, but now she writes about it, talks about it and makes money off the confession, as you noted. Something is missing in that girl.

And her Dad was a good actor, respectable as far as I know. I saw him in person once; what blue, blue eyes!
