He is really a meek and mild college professor, who has a reputation as a good teacher who stays in touch with his students. But don't try to match IQs with him. That is another reason why he and John Paul were so close.

Rome was really not to keen on the Spanish Inquisition, because the pope had little control of it.

German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the strict defender of Catholic orthodoxy for the past 23 years, was elected Pope on Tuesday despite a widespread assumption he was too old and divisive to win election.

Reuters obviously feels like they were slapped in the face by the conclave. Good!

Great pictures, thanks for posting them. Long live Pope Benedict XVI.

Though I'm not Catholic, I rejoice in the choice.

By the Grace of God, faith, courage, and a stubbornly resolute will to accept his suffering as an offering to and blessing to God, Pope John II lived far longer than his physical infirmities would have otherwise predicted. The man had sheer grit and an unshakable faith and indomitability .. so stubborn was he in his devotion to serving to the last possible moment he could, to his last breath.

I truly believe that this acceptance of suffering was his last chance to show the world the reality of the sanctity of life .. and the submission to God's will and dominion over the number of his and our days on this earth.

God Bless Him .. he seared our hearts and minds with the graphic photographic evidence of that devotion and suffering.. and left a memorable picture of suffering in the name of Jesus.

Publicly sharing his disability and pain was his choice... his last memorable lesson to us. He truly was a living saint among us ... how blessed we are that this great man came into our midst as our Holy Father on earth.

God Bless You Fully and Dearly, Pope John Paul II -- I love you and miss you. The election of your protege and close advisor makes Catholics relieved, grateful and confidently hopeful .. just as you planned for Holy Mother Church, for us and for him.

Long Live Pope Benedict XVI!

Dear Darkwolf,

I really don't mind.

You're a pleasant enough interlocutor.

Your friend is on the tail-end of the "Spirit of Vatican II" folks.

Kinda sad.

I suppose that perhaps she doesn't believe in the corporeal Resurrection of Jesus, or the Real Presence of the Eucharist, or perhaps even any of the miracles of the New Testament?

Is she one of these types, "Jesus was an itinerant preacher who preached love and stuff, and never meant to get himself crucified, deified, or churchified."?

WOW -- I'm really impressed now. Would you kindly share some of your instinctive "mercies" with someone seriously hunting a new job, and sweating the the rent? -- (not really begging here .. but almost ;).

LOL Let me try to encapsulate it: I think she believes everything in the Bible, but from the beginning of the church on, she's saying that Jesus didn't want the church to be the way it is because he didn't organize it himself.

I think she doesn't like how the church is acting on the molestation and selling-off-property issues. And from that, I think she's listening to her liberal priest and kind of following along, reading books he recommends, etc.

I'm in a weird position. I'm a non-believer who's trying to point out to her, purely on the merits, that while it's fine to decide you're not a catholic or whatever, it's a strange argument to say the Catholic Church isn't the church of Christ--WHILE being IN that church.

If you don't believe, leave. But why remain in the church and try to change it into just another protestant church? It's baffling.

Have you all heard this glorious musical production, with Pope John Paul II speaking and singing?? It's just so beautiful.... grab a tissue.

http://jeffreylloyd.blogs.com/PopeJohnPaulII-AbbaPater.mp3

This site is for the words of Pope John II spoken on Vatican Radio and set to inspiring music and produced on a CD .. I never knew this was done until I found it on a thread during the his last days. Just incredible:Abba Pater

Dear Darkwolf,

I guess I'm a bit taken aback by someone who can believe that Jesus fed 5000 with a few loaves of bread and a coupla fishes, and trusts the Bible to tell her that, but doesn't trust the Bible when Jesus is quoted as saying, "...I will found My CHURCH on this rock..."

I mean, heck, if I believe that the Bible accurately reports that a man ROSE FROM THE DEAD AFTER BEING DEAD FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS, why would I disbelieve it when it has the same fellow saying to someone, "Feed my sheep, tend my lambs, feed my sheep," and giving the Keys to the Kingdom to the same guy.

As for the misdeeds of clerics, well, Jesus also told us that this would be the case. He specifically told us not to follow their examples. But He also specifically told us that they would teach with authority, and we are required to obey the teaching of the Church.

I guess your earlier comments were on the money. She seems to have fallen in with a more liberal mindset. I'm not up on the various liberal/conservative views in the church.

Anyway, thanks again for your time. It's been very informative.

Ever hear the quote, "I've been rich and I've been poor, and rich is better?"
I am living proof that sometimes poor is better. I would not be rich again if you paid me in gold. ;)
About that rent though...where do you live, what state? There are some nice towns in America where you hardly need a job to live well. You can buy a decent house with the same cash you'd spend on a few months of rent in most cities.
I'm living in a good-sized house with a yard and a garage, which cost less than the desk in front of me, or the bed I'll be sleeping in tonight (stuff I picked up while rich).
So if you are telling yourself, "I need this income to live in this area..." maybe it's time to re-examine the location.
