I'm not ashamed and it's a question that deserves an answer. Another poster put up a really good article from the Jerusalem Post that explains the matter thoroughly. I don't believe he is a Nazi today or an anti-semite, of that I've seen no evidence. But I think an explanation of his past is not only expected but warranted. He is open about the question, who are you to berate me?

The good news about him is that he is going to really p*** off the liberals. I am overall satisfied, I think however Jean-Marie Luster would have been a better choice.

Why do they choose such old Pope's? His health will become an issue before too long then they'll have to go through the process again.

Two reasons: 1) Pope Benedict XVI's age made him a more viable choice, as the Cardinals often like to take a bit of a breather after a long, active, monumental papacy, such as John Paul II's. Being 78 means he probably won't stick around for 20-25 years. 2) Since the cardinals themselves are usually older, you're not likely to see a 40-something Pope. Of course, JP2 was only 58.

It's really sad when you think about it with the mind of Christ. Not that they don't do it to themselves, and deserve it, but life must be a bitter burden when you spend it angrily set against God and his ways. Jesus wept over such as them.

My preferred translation for general study is the New Oxford annotated RSV. It has all of the various Apocrypha books of the Roman Catholics, and a few of the others such as Maccabees 3 and 4.

In one of those non canonical (by anyone) books, a mention was made of the great Eagle from across the sea that would not be on the side of the people of God.

I know I'm late to the party, but one thought strikes me: isn't this a rather fast Papal election?

The average time in the past 100 years has been three days. Word has it that Ratzinger had 50 votes already going into the conclave, and he only needed 77 or so total. I heard two speculations on the final vote, that he got 81 or 91 votes of the 115.

I'm just thrilled with the choice, no matter how fast it was!
