Thanks, so it is 81 votes instead of 91 votes? (on the 4th ballot)

There will never be another JPII. He was the most remarkable man and he loved God and the Church with his entire being.

I don't know that they have had any contact. They will agree about the Culture of Life, and there is some speculation that Ratzinger (who was silent about Iraq) may be less typically "European" about world affairs than some in the Vatican.

"Aha! Trust the MSM not to mention that Blessed Titus had been a victim of Nazi experiments."

Bingo. Light just went on in my head. Pope Bendict XVI is keying into the danger of stem cell research, cloning, etc. That totally explains the MSM tit about Blessed Tito. (Sorry, I'm just a little slow sometimes.)

Pope Benedict XVI is outspoken in his devotion to the Blessed Mother, another nail in his coffin as far as the MSM goes.

I can truly say that liberals, secular humanists, and non-Catholic leftists spend a lot more time worrying about these things than real orthodox Catholics do. The Pope (ANY pope) does not have the power to change all the things that liberals seem to think are up for grabs every time a papal election comes along.

It's not like a presidential election when some smarmy yahoo or dork like Bill Clinton or John Kerry can "make up" whatever way they would like reality to be defined according to their imagination (or libido) and impose that on all Americans. The large bulk of the Christian message (of divine revelation) is already written in stone (so to speak). No mere mortal man whether he be a bishop or a pope can just "make things up" to suit liberal, modern, progressive opinion.

Dear Darkwolf,

Well, I don't know whether your friend thinks she is Catholic or not.

However, for those of us not impressed by the Jesus Seminar, we take seriously the words of our Lord when he said,

"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My heavenly Father.

"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.

"I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

From this, it appears that JESUS thought He was founding a Church, and appointing Peter the keeper of the Keys thereto.

This is de fide teaching of the Catholic Church, absolutely binding on all Catholics.

It's Lustiger, the Frenchman, who's Jewish. Ratzinger is a died-in-the-wool Catholic Bavarian.

As head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Ratzinger has made several waves over the past year. Top among them was a letter he sent in August to Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington advising clergy that they must deny Communion to supporters of abortion rights who, he said, persist in cooperating in what he termed a "grave sin." The note also provided advice on how Catholic voters should proceed when faced with a choice that included a candidate who supported abortion rights. No names were mentioned, but several American bishops had spoken out against Sen. John F. Kerry, the Democratic presidential candidate, for his views on abortion.

That is just fantastic!!!

People will do what they can to smear the man. The new Pope is very much a Christian first more than anything. He is too Bible savy to believe what your SIL says. Read his recent homily. It is compelling to anyone who would call themselves Christian. Satan is just trying to divide people. Thats why many will loath him and fear him without a cause. You should see all the whining on the CNN message board. All the liberals are in meltdown because God is not letting up and conforming to their perverse views on life.

McBrien came up with a good explanation, or a hopeful one from his side. Benedict XV tried to cool the modernist controversy and the struggle with anticlerical government and elsewhere. He was, of course, diverted from Church affairs by the Great War. He tried to intervene diplomatically, and even had the support of The Emperor Karl in 1916 in efforts to negotiate peace. But neither the Presbyterian Wilson, who had a special hatred of Austria, nor the anticlerical governments of France and Italy, nor the Germans, who despised the papacy.

No problem. The selection is good for those conservative issues. Other candidates could have addressed them as well.
In the final analysis, we don't know WHY the cardinals made this choice over others. It SEEMS to strengthen a European focus geopolitically and on certain moral and spiritual issues (by any objective standard).

That article is a keeper, so many GOOD quotes.
You really ought to post it on its own thread!
(I know, it must be a small portion only).

The last two paragraphs are particularly wonderful. :)
