"Have all the votes from Florida been counted yet?"

Ohio has the "swing" Cardinal. (Saw one in my yard though this morning - might have to have a recount - the one I saw might have been disenfranchised - anyone heard from Jesse yet?

Seriously, prayers for Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI.

The last statement declares faith, hope and trust:

"They were engaged in the most crucial battle of history, against the Dragon and the evil Empire which he possessed. The purpose of the Revelation was to comfort the Church with the assurance that God was in control, so that even the awesome might of the Dragon and the Beast would not stand before the armies of Jesus Christ.”

May it ever be thus!! God -- bless and keep Your Holy Church and guide our new Pope Benedict XVI with humility, grace and courage ... courage, most especially, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

I was thinking today about what it must have been like in years gone by when the only way the Italians knew there was a new pope was when they heard the bells.

And I believe in religion that respects all other religions.

After all, as Presbyterians, we pray:

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Bear in mind, I think it's good to have a Pope who is strict on moral matters. I know you'll disagree, but I am for a married order of priests. My husband is Greek Orthodox, and their priests can be married, though those from the married orders cannot become Grand Poobah (not disrespecting greeks, just forgot the word!)

Could a Catholic answer a question for me? (I already know the non-Catholic answer so that's not required, thank you.) I told a friend that I thought Catholics believed that Jesus created the first Pope, and I was told Jesus did not create a religion or define a system for ruling one. Again, I know that's how non-Catholics believe, but what is the Catholic response to that? Thank you in advance. (Feel free to answer by mail if you think this might interrupt the mood on this thread.)

you don't need to say anything to anyone, the Doctine of the Catholic church stands whether you say word one or not. no one is looking for you to enforce the commandments. Christians, Catholics, should exhort each other to excellence. the rules are what they are, whether you like them, acknowledge them, or rag on anyone else to keep them. How about we each worry about our own faith and morals and just try to not assist someone else in sinning and call it good?

Choices, choices, I love that pic too.
You know, He really, truly looks the part.

I am so joyfully happy.
The Holy Spirit guided the Cardinals.
May God bless them all, and LONG LIVE Pope Benedict XVI.

MSNBC reports that the Holy Father won by four votes!

Idjits. Ballots burned.

Anyway, is that 2/3's plus 4? Or over 80 votes? They make it sound like 4 more than the next candidate.

You haven't been here long enough to know that they get on my last nerve. :-)

Thanks for the advice though.

You're right...I am inexperienced here, but I have been in some other even more brutal forums/chatrooms.

There are some in this world who are miserable and who are hellbent on making everyone else miserable right along with them. They count on YOU getting riled up. If they can't get a rise out of you, then it's no fun for them anymore. It's taken me years to realize that negative people are detrimental to my health and a waste of my time, so for the most part, I don't bother with them anymore.

Maybe. The pope has a history of heart problems, but so did Leo XIII who was about the same age as the new pope and who went on to reign for 25 years.
You never can tell. John Paul I was only 65 when he was elected, had no health history, but he was gone within a month.

I have not been disrespectful or demeaning of the new Pope. Having a discussion about his past is not heresey. I am not questioning his ability, honor or devotion.

I wonder why our Holy Father chose the name Benedict?

I heard or read here or somewhere that St. Benedict protected the Church in a time of crisis. Don't know any more than that, except that it's the second or third most chosen papal name, next to John and Gregory.
