The MSM hates Blessed Titus Brandsma because of pamphlets he'd edited. When the late Pope was failing, they howled about his setting the beatification of Titus in motion. (He volunteered to take the place of another inmate...of Dachau, I think...who was to be executed.)

He was also the victim of Nazi medical experiments. During these "sessions" he was heard to scream "Not my will but thine be done!!" The "nurse" who attended him, a lapsed Catholic, later returned to the Church.

Thank you both. My friend's comment continues: "Things got more complicated as the early "Christians" went along and people started disagreeing about what to do and who should decide. Eventually the Bishop of Rome decided his opinion was more valid than anyone else's and he kicked out anyone who wouldn't go along with that (Greek Orthodox church). So, we ended up with a roman-style hierarchical system. The mass is a combination of coming together as a family, listening to His words, and remembering Him (as he asked us to) by re-enacting the last supper. I think he'd approve of the "celebration" but I don't think he'd be too pleased with the structure of the institution."

I guess what she's saying is that Jesus didn't set up the church and he didn't create its structure or give the pope rule over the church (however that's worded).

Actually, I like it here quite a bit. And I like the fact that we have a Pope with a story in his background. Sounds like he went through he** in the war and who really knows what he did? I doubt he was a rabid Nazi. I doubt he was dragged from his bed in the dark of night. I bet he went to the Hitler Youth as a reluctant youth. Whatever happened, he later took his vows. I have reiterated this many times. The fact that JPII found his friendship valuable says volumes to me.

The Church oif Rome was wrapped in the mantle of Peter from the earliest days, as the citadel of orthodoxy. His successors, the bishops of Rome, became know as
"popes", which is simply from the Greek meaning "Father" or Patriarch. Now this term "ruler" has to be qualified greatly. In our politically terms, he is much more like the Chief Justice rather than the President. In Church terms, he is king, priest and prophet. But despite his eminence, he is no more the "ruler" of our local Church than C.J. Rehnquist rules your local school board. In the end his power rests totally on persuasion.
