If I was Pope, the excommunications would have begun already - starting with the Kennedy family, and the Inquisition would be revving up to deal with liberal theologians.

Gosh, you are petty. And vacuous.

Thank you for the compliment...as to vacuous. I wouldn't open my mouth too very wide were I you.

After all, NC is home to john edwards and Mt. Airy!

This current Benedict's father was a Nazi in his youth

Quit spreading slander! His father was an anti-Nazi who was forced to move his family to get away from them.

I suggest it will be a 12 year papacy.

Excellent thought. Adding my hope to a long papacy.

I really feel that the prayers of all the Non Catholics but pro-lifers helped us get this wonderful man chosen as our new Pope. Thank you Pope John Paul II (the Great),you did good, and you can truly rest now. I love the way we all are together on this, life is so much more important than trivial matters that may divide us. Gotta get more tissues.

The Holy Spirit chooses the Pope. All the cardinals have to do is listen.

I'm not Catholic, and this is a joyous thread for them so I'll save my response for another time about the election of a new Pope.

I have a very hard time with all of us so glad the rules are strict now that they don't apply to us anymore.

Which "rules" do you think "no longer apply"?

Those of us NOT in the "unitarian universalist church of whatever I feel like" live by the "rules" because we delight in God, and desire to obey Him. Our obedience is a result of our love, and our trust in the One who gave us those guidelines.

God's commands aren't arbitrary -- they're meant to protect us.

Why do the Jewish people blame the Pope fr not doing enough when I never hear what the Jewish Head Rabbi of ROME did???

Was that the one who, with his wife, converted to Catholicism after the War, drawn in some part at least by how impressed he was with how much Pius XII had done to help the Jews?

And tomorrow is her birthday. What a gift!!

Seriously, I know EWTN has been quite vocal in encouraging the faithful to pray for the Conclave, as so many of us did, that they follow the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the fruits are quite evident.

Here comes the Hitler youth business.
Man, this has been addressed ad nauseum,
but maybe we ought to write a "sourced" response to post every time?

I would have preferred someone younger, but in terms of theological necessity, we could not ask for more. It is a time to rejoice.

Personally, I cannot see why there was any need to invite any of this controvesy. I think they missed a real opportunity in not selecting
If you truly and strongly believe in the teachings of the Catholic Church, and the presence of the Holy Spirit, you will recognize that the decision was not, actually, made BY the Cardinals. It was made long ago by God, and the Cardinals were required to open their hearts and souls to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in casting their votes.

Obviously, they were humbled, and spiritually prepared to have reached this decision so soon.

The Cardinals took their responsability to heart, thus the voice of God, through the Holy Spirit was clearly heard by them.

What a beautiful sound that was heard throughout the world! Jubilation.

I've always liked him. I'm going to pull the transcripts of his homily from yesterday and his presentation today ... as soon as I give my daughter a turn on the computer :-).

I'm not too keen on the name Benedict

One of the channels already dubbed him "Papa Ratzi."

If it were not for infant baptism and praying to saints I could become catholic.

Hope this helps 8-)

Praying to saints

Revelation 5:8

And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twentyfour elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Infant baptism

You make an excellent but easily overlooked point. Thanks.

I'm trying to remember the last time "they" were right about anything.

Time and temperature.

Okay, maybe just the time.
