Benedict - hmm, doesn't sound promising.

It sounds very good indeed:

St. Benedict

Also known as Benedict of Narsia; Benedict of Nursia; Founder of Western Monasticism

Memorial 11 July (formerly 21 March)

Profile
Roman nobility. Twin brother of Saint Scholastica.

Studied in Rome, but was dismayed by the lack of discipline and the lackadasical attitude of his fellow students. Fled to the mountains near Subiaco, living as a hermit in a cave for three years; reported to have been fed by a raven. His virtues caused an abbey to request him to lead them. Founded the monastery at Monte Cassino, where he wrote the Rule of his order. His discipline was such that an attempt was made on his life; some monks tried by poison him, but he blessed the cup and rendered it harmless. He returned to his cave, but continued to attract followers, and eventually established twelve monasteries. Had the ability to read consciences, prophesy, and forestall attacks of the devil. Destroyed pagan statues and altars, drove demons from groves sacred to pagans. At one point there were over 40,000 monasteries guided by the Benedictine Rule. A summation of the Rule: "Pray and work."

Born
c.480, Narsia, Umbria, Italy

Died
21 March 547; of a fever while in prayer at Monte Cassino; buried in the same tomb as Scholastica

Name Meaning
blessed (= benedict)

Patronage: against nettle rash, against poison, against witchcraft, agricultural workers. coppersmiths, dying people, erysipelas, Europe, farm workers. farmers. fever, gall stones, inflammatory diseases, Italian architects, kidney disease, monks, nettle rash, people in religious orders, poison, schoolchildren, servants who have broken their master's belongings, speliologists, temptations, witchcraft

~snip~

Girded with a faith, and the performance of good works, let us follow in Christ's path by the guidance of the Gospel; then we shall deserve to see him "who has called us into his kingdom." If we wish to attain a dwelling place in his kingdom, we shall not reach it unless we hasten there by our good deeds.

Just as there exists an evil fervor, a bitter spirit, which divides us from God and leads us to hell, so there is a good fervor which sets us apart from evil inclinations and leads us toward God and eternal life. No one should follow what he considers to be good for himself, but rather what seems good for another. Let them put Christ before all else; and may he lead us all to everlasting life.

from the Rule of Saint Benedict

Well, as I'm reading, I'm putting that all together; no wonder they're all upset, eh? Nobody to further THEIR agenda.

When will they EVER get the picture? The world has taken a giant step to the RIGHT!

I have a Catholic church down the street. The bells were ringing there just a while ago. Wonderful to listen to!

This is wonderful. Benedict XVI has a kind face. I was a teenager when JP II was called. I told my dad then that I thought he'd be a good pope.

I had no idea just how good of course.

Ratzinger at best is a caretaker Pope and will not be able address the many concerns and problems the Church has at this point in time.

Don't underestimate him.

He's the one who made sure that everyone was on the same page, doctrinally speaking.

So he was the Tom Delay of Vatican?

What is scoop on Ratzinger. Why is he a good choice?

As a cardinal, Pope Benedict XVI was known as the "Enforcer." If you got a call to see Cardinal Ratzinger, you knew you were in trouble. I love that he is strict, experienced, has been close to PJPII, and was, obviously, the choice of the Holy Spirit. His Homily, yesterday, was a preface. His policies are clear, his stance on teachings of the church is solid.

This is a joyous, joyous selection for Catholics who strive to comply with the rules, recognize that we do not always succeed, but know in our hearts the need to keep the standards high.

The rewards of meeting the challenges, overcoming the hurdles, failing - trying again, working hard to live by the rules - and achieving the goals gives us greater happiness and peace than when the bar is lowered to make religion "easy," and the mandates are in flux.

Notice how he referred to JPII as 'The Great' in his speech--a classy move.

***But I only see the Tribulation lasting 7 years...***

What you've outlined is basically what many evangelicals believe (excluding the specifically RCC stuff). Where did you learn this? I didn't know Catholics believed these things.

You can hear the liberal wailing and gnashing of teeth. McBrien sounded crestfallen and devastated,

Absolutely the most fun I've had watching TV since John Kerry lost the election.

Ratzinger would have been about six years old when the Nazis came to power, about twelve when WWII started, and about eighteen when it ended; for people to call him a "Nazi" because he was conscripted into the German Army for a brief period is really going too far.

Right. He wouldn't have served voluntarily.

The name Benedict has nothing to do with olives

http://www.spiritoftruth.org/prophecy.htm

Who will be the next Pope? According to the prophecy of Saint Malachy, the 111th pope in his list is signified by "Gloria de Olivae" or 'the Glory of the Olives'. In this regard, it appears that the next pope might be Italian Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi. Why? Consider the following insight from a blog FOUND HERE:

"#9. The Glory of the Olive. The Order of St. Benedict has said this Pope will come from their order. It is interesting that Jesus gave his apocalyptic prophecy about the end of time from the Mount of Olives. This Pope will reign during the beginning of the tribulation Jesus spoke of. The 111th prophesy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The Order of Saint Benedict has claimed that this pope will come from their ranks. Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its fight against evil"

The real question is whether or not Ratzinger HIMSELF is a Benedictine. Taking on the name of St. Benedict does not indicate that he is from that Order. However, if Ratzinger is of the Order of St. Benedict, then there might be some credence...I don't know.

But the name alone does not signify.

Anyone know if Ratzinger is part of the Order of St. Benedict?

Alkhin, who is an Associate in the Order of St. Benedict.
